Hi Buddy
I know that you did some midi on the steel
but was wondering what you had out on record or tape as far as recordings.
Thought I saw where you did your xmas album with some midi but not sure.
Recently picked up the DVD you did with Hal at the Belcove and it sure blew me away.
Would like to hear some of your stuff with midi

The Christmas CD has a bunch of the midi synth on it. BUT if you're not really listening for it, you won't notice. Buddy played the parts as that instrument would. There is one place where he pushed a pedal during a midi/synth fill. (But that's all I'm saying.)

That must be that one note that Carl Dixon was always talking about. 
Seriously, I've always thought that the arrangements on that album are amazing. I didn't even know it was MIDI steel arranged by Buddy until a decade after I first heard it. This is why we call him "Maestro". |

I believe Blues At The Factory and, perhaps, Oleo.

| "Oleo" on the "One For the Road" album features his amazing midi work in the "flute" and "trumpet" solos. It was some time after I got the record that I realized there were no credits for those instruments, and listening really closely a few subtle things in those solos reveal steel technique. But his playing in each case is so idiomatic for the instrument that if they had put phony names in the credits for those instruments, I can't be sure I'd ever have picked up on the fact that it was Buddy playing steel synth. |

SO!!! The vibes on the Bobby Garrett record were midi-ed! I'd often wondered, but was too embarrassed to ask here on the Forum.
There's so much he CAN do, I'd actually thought he might have executed his trademark steel licks on another instrument - I'm almost relieved that he didn't! He's intimidating enough!

If I recall correctly, the older stuff (e.g., One for the Road) was a guitar synth, but NOT MIDI. Buddy and Phil used an early Korg one-voice synthesizer (I believe that X-911 is the model -- I have one but I'm not at home right now).
That box has a really cool trumpet and flute and a really wild portamento. I haven't used mine in years but I got a lot of use out of it at the time.
