I saw a cobalt-plated Stevens dobro steel in a music supplies catalog. I'm wondering if anyone here has tried a cobalt-plated steel, and what they are like. I prefer to use a longer, heavier Shubb Pearce steel; I wonder if anyone cobalt plates them. Ed |

I haven't tried one, but I wouldn't think it would have any advantages for us over chrome-plated bars. Cobalt plating is a little safer to do than chrome plating, but I wouldn't imagine it would hold up any better, or look any better than chrome. (Probably wouldn't sound much different than nickle or chrome, either.) It is better at corrosion resistance than nickle plating, but still not nearly as good as chrome.
I'd buy one (a cobalt plated bar) only if the cost was comparitively low. |

I recently tried some cobalt plated national finger picks.
They're a little slicker than the regulars, but the plating does wear down.
Don't know if there'd be similar wear on a bar. |
