Here's a cool link -- like watching something from an alternate universe! I mean... he WAS the King of Western Swing... but stomping your wife to death didn't go over too well, so he lost the crown to you know who.

D'ya suppose that coulda been Joaquin on,what appeared to be,a D-8 non-pedal Bigsby? I guess TV directors/cameramen must think that steelers are too just ugly to put on camera, therefore, they just "shoot" their hands. (here we go again. )

WOW! I just thought we played western swing. That's really cool. We do sometimes play "Trouble With Me" but sure not like that. I think we are eight or ten players short.

Good to see ol' Tex Williams on the video. I noticed he was also playing upright bass in the last tune along with Deuce Spriggins. The girl who did the yodeling, was that Judy (forgot last name) who used to be married to Merle Travis in the 40's?...JH in Va.

Jerry:

That is Carolina Cotton doing the yodeling.

Regarding Bigsby dating: If my eyes aren't failing me, the copyright date shown at the beginning of the film says 1945. How does that correlate with Joaquin's Bigsby dating from 1947?

I hate to jump in and spoil a good story with some unpleasant facts, but the aforementioned Bigsby, that's currently out in my studio, was built 12-20-48

He killed Ella Mae on 4-3-61, which has been discussed here on the Forum before.

I had never seen any film of Spade Cooley.

Unfortunate details of his latter life (and death) aside, he was one handsome dog and must have had the ladies after him.

That scene at the end with Murphey on the Bigsby-that would have been nice if it had lasted for about two minutes. Some killer playing there.

Back to the facts on the fantastic music short!

It was done for Warner Brothers in 1945 shortly before Tex Williams left with much of the band to form the Western Caravan. Carolina Cotton was married to Deuce Spriggens also a long time Cooley member that left with Tex Williams to form the Western Caravan.

The Bigsby in the clip has to be the first double lap, built in -45 or even earlier. It could be 6/8 string necks. The console T8 Joaquin had was completed in late -47. Would be interesting to know if there were any Bigsby guitars built between those two.

Now that's a lineup - 4 fiddles, 2 guitars, piano, steel, drums, two double basses and a harp and accordion.

Now all he needs is the horn section....

IMHO, Spade Cooley had the best Western Swing Band.

A little bit of Trivia here: Spade Cooley was a double for Roy Rogers in some of those cowboy movies in Hollywood.

I really wish today's musicians (mainly lead guitarists) would study this clip and take a lesson in how to interact with other musicians and play with them instead of against them.

For Bobby Boggs. Yep he done it Bobby. Was let out of the jail in Vacaville California to do a concert with David Houston at the Oakland Auditorium. He performed then died of a heart attack back stage. I was at the concert. He did a great job. Did not look ill to me and sure hadn't lost any of his technique. Roy Drusky was also on that show in late 1969.

I have seen a series of high quality 8 x 10 black and white professionally shot photographs taken backstage in the dressing rooms at Spade's last performance. David Houston was in some of the them.

Damnedest thing I ever saw. In some of the photos--presumably the final ones of the series and possibly of his life--Spade looked 10 years older than in others. It was very obvious to the naked eye. I can only assume that whatever happened (heart?), the final pictures show the early symptoms. He just looked terribly worn in some pictures and very good in others.
