There is some what of a controversy over who actually wrote the tune, but Leon MCCauliffe was the first to record the tune on steel guitar. Jody.

I remember too that Merle Travis recorded a version with the words much later than the 1936 McA version that was credited to him. I'd have to look up when the words were penned.

Spade Cooley had a nice version out with a concert harp in the intro.

What about Hawaiian Steel Guitar Rag ? the poem has been written, now all is needed is the melody to make it a complete song ?
quote:
Aloha ???????????,

I'm looking for someone to compose steel guitar music for "Hawaiian Steel Guitar Rag".

It is copyrighted and also registered with BMI, and therefore ready someone's copyrighted music and recording.

Loosely based on Bob Will's hit, this could become a classic of Hawaiian steel guitar music.

regards and Mahalo...Larry W. Jones, Island Song Lyrics

Try this, steel guitar rag is C6 up the frets and panhandle rag is C6 down the frets. You will find the notes there.

I tabbed this off of the original Bob Wills recording. Leon played it on dobro in E tuning I believe, but I record copied it with a digital sampler (Chop shop) for non pedal C6 tuning/six strings. Weaver was indeed the first to record the main licks (bottle neck blues) way before the Bob Wills band did it.

I read that Wills was doing a radio show recording and needed something fast to record and Leon came up with Steel guitar Rag, he denied ever hearing Weavers recording. When I first tabbed this song out, I was trying to get the same voicings as Leons dobro, but as Ray Monty pointed out to me, some of the voicings work better on C6 as single notes. I still mess around with this tune as far as playing the theme and then soloing off the top of my head with trick hick sounding licks.

I see people request it from time to time on the tab section of the forum, so here it is again:
