I remember several stellar Emmons tracks on the early Capitol Linda Ronstadt albums (late 60s, early 70s). I know there's other cool steel too, but can somebody tell me which songs have Buddy...?

They're all available from "itunes" now and I want to download those...

thanks...

On the self titled "Linda Ronstadt" Cd, Buddy played on "In My Reply" and "I Ain't Always Been Faithful". On the "Don't Cry Now" Cd, Buddy played on "Don't Cry Now". I recommend at least Linda's first six albums or so. What a great time for musical cross pollination. Plus, you get Sneaky Pete, Ed Black, Buddy Emmons, Dan Dugmore and an occasional Danny Pendelton on steel. I know of least one track where Sneaky was not credited, but when they mixed the song, they stuck one quick lick in. I was listening late one night and out of the blue came this classic Sneaky lick, then it was gone.
Some of her album are around $10 for the whole thing, iTunes is great too. Enjoy, I know you will.

Thanks Dave...

The first 4 albums are now on one 2 CD set for about $25... I might spring for that at some point, but for now I think I'll download the ones you mentioned...!

Does anyone know if Linda is traveling with a steel player? We're going to her show here in southern Oregon in a couple of weeks, and I'm hoping for a steel in her band...

My favorites are her sessions with Nelson Riddle. No steel, but what great orchestration!

Linda is playing a show in Wilmington Delaware at the GRAND OPERA HOUSE on June 13.
She is due to arrive in town at the end of the week to rehearse the show.
As far as I know, it will be David Bromberg and either his quartet or his "big band" opening, and then they will be accompanying Linda for her set. I have not heard about a pedal steel for this show.
Edited to add link. and it will be the BIG BAND http://www.davidbromberg.net/ronstadt.html

"Hand Sown, Home Grown" finally made i to domestic CD this year (might have been late last year), and it's incredible. As I recall, it was her first post-Stone Ponys record, and has Sneaky, Clarence white and a bunch of others on it. Almost every counry-rock or even rock band I've been in for 30 years or so has played at least a couple songs from that one.

Jim
I was Linda's first steel player, starting in April of 1968, and in early 1969 I was on "Hand Sown Home Grown" on mandolin and was present for most the sessions.

Sneaky Pete was not steel guitarist on that album. The session personnel was Red Rhodes, steel; Clarence White, lead guitar; Dick Rosmini, rhythm guitar; Richard Greene, fiddle; Chip Douglas, bass and producer; "Fast Eddie" Hoh, drums; yours truly, mandolin. There might have been some overdubs done while I was not around, but I'm certain Red was the only steel player.

Trivia: Buddy E. was subbing for Red at the Palomino in the house band while we were recording "Hand Sown."

Also, this album has the original cut of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" with Red on steel/distortion/phase shifter. A second version was cut a couple years later with Ed Black doing the same effects setup but a slightly different solo, though reminiscent of Red's.

I just went for the Capitol Years double (partly 'cos I got a chuckle out of the iTunes review which goes "some less-charitable listeners might find such period flair as fuzz-toned steel guitar as a detriment, too, although there's a certain undeniable charm to those dated sounds." The cheek!).

Herb, you can rightly be proud to be on these sessions, the musicianship is fantastic throughout. There is steel on almost every song and some great live at the Troubadour recordings on the set too.

Barney Hoskyns' book "Hotel California: Singer-Songwriters and Cocaine Cowboys in the LA Canyons, 1967-76" is interesting background reading to the early country rock scene.

Herb - thanks for the info. I know we talked about that one before, but a bunch of us had been under the impression it was Sneaky doing the fuxzz solo on "Silver Threads"...but never confirmed.

Nice to get it cleared up! Some of the guys on the Clarence White forum will be interested in that one. Thinking about it, there was always something "non-Sneaky" about the solo that made me wonder, and now I get it - and it DOES sound like Red!

Dave , Not only do you get to hear all the great steel players you listed but I think fellow forumite and new steeler Mickey Mcgee played drums on the "Don't Cry Now" album. Maybe he could chime in here.

Hey Mickey! It was good to see ya a couple years ago in Mesa, and great reminiscing about the old country-rock days in LA. Come on out to Texas for the Jamboree next March. Buddy Emmons will be in attendance.
