Are "sliding harmonics" an integral part of most steel guitar players' musianship; something they use pretty much all the time ? Or are they only used as an occasional novelty? Or are they hardly ever or never used, generally speaking ?

I'd say they are integral and I use them in many songs, but only sparingly within each song. Makes a nice unobtrusive fill behind fiddle or vocal melody. Harmonic fills fit nicely in the normally unoccupied upper registers in an ensemble. Using just a touch in the upper registers helps keep the mix from having too many instruments cluttering the middle registers. It's a technique that's been around a long time. Wish I could think of a good recording off the top of my head but nothing comes to mind.
