Anyone know the name of steel player for the Happy Goodman Family back in the late 60's? On my video he appears to be in his early 20's or younger. |

Keith,
Probably would have been Jack Smith around that time. Steve "Rabbit" Easter played steel for them also, but I believe that would have been more early/mid 70's. |

One other thing, if the video is the one with the footage of the all-night singing, where the steel player is wearing the tux and playing a Sho~Bud Professional, that would be Jack. |

If my memory serves me right, Rusty Goodman played steel some. I know he played some lead guitar, but I think I saw a old video of him on the steel. Maybe I'm dreaming. |

If my memory serves me right Jack Smith was a son-in-law to Howard and Vestal Goodman. At any rate he is a teriffic steel player. The Goodman album "Wanted Live" recorded in St. Louis is a great example of how well Jack played. Definitely one of my favorite albums to listen to. |

You are right Charlie, Rusty did play steel. I read a book about the Goodmans several years ago and it had some pictures of Rusty playing a lap steel on a stand. It said in the book that he was quite good, and patterned his playing after Jerry Byrd, as almost every steel player did at that time.

I feel better. At my age I don't always know if I really saw something or if I dreamed it. I saw him on a pedal steel. A friend in San Antonio might still have that video. Thanks for the verification. |
