Anyone know the name of steel player for the Happy Goodman Family back in the late 60's? On my video he appears to be in his early 20's or younger.

Keith,

Probably would have been Jack Smith around that time. Steve "Rabbit" Easter played steel for them also, but I believe that would have been more early/mid 70's.

One other thing, if the video is the one with the footage of the all-night singing, where the steel player is wearing the tux and playing a Sho~Bud Professional, that would be Jack.

If my memory serves me right, Rusty Goodman played steel some. I know he played some lead guitar, but I think I saw a old video of him on the steel. Maybe I'm dreaming.

If my memory serves me right Jack Smith was a son-in-law to Howard and Vestal Goodman. At any rate he is a teriffic steel player. The Goodman album "Wanted Live" recorded in St. Louis is a great example of how well Jack played. Definitely one of my favorite albums to listen to.

You are right Charlie, Rusty did play steel. I read a book about the Goodmans several years ago and it had some pictures of Rusty playing a lap steel on a stand. It said in the book that he was quite good, and patterned his playing after Jerry Byrd, as almost every steel player did at that time.

I feel better. At my age I don't always know if I really saw something or if I dreamed it. I saw him on a pedal steel. A friend in San Antonio might still have that video. Thanks for the verification.
