I just aquired a Gibson HoundDog type Dobro which comes with a Fishman pickup inside the guitar. I have the old type Fishman pre-amp but it just doesn't seem to get the job done on the bandstand. I can't get any volume out of the thing. Can anyone recommend a good preamp that would work with this guitar. Thanks in advance....JH

What type Fishman pickup do you have? They make several types that will work in a dobro. I haven't got it installed yet, but I just acquired the one that looks like a donut and installs in the cone screw.

I use the L.R.Baggs Para Acoustic DI and it works fine with the passive "doughnut".The Baggs has an input gain knob as well as an output volume. I have the input gain almost full because the Fishman has pretty low output.

I've tried just about all the dobro pickups on the market and Bill Lawrence makes the hottest and best sounding pickup you can get. I also have used the Don Lace dobro pickup for a nice mellow sound.LA

Jerry, I have tried just about every dobro pickup on the market and the Bill Lawrence pickup is by far the best for any volumn and does'nt change the tone.I've also used the Don Lace dobro pickup for a nice mellow sound.LA

I have McIntyre pickups on both of my resos. One is the original round one that is stuck on the legs of the spider and the other is the feather type that attaches to the underside of the cone. They both work well but I prefer the feather type. i have Crown condeser mikes in both and run them through the Raven PMBII preamp blender into a SWR Calif. Blonde amp or monitors if I don't have time to hook up the amp. DA |

I've also used a round McIntyre in a dobro but it was so high endy it peeled paint. However when I ran it through an old on-board Fishman pre-amp it settled down quite a bit. Volume was never lacking.

Is it the pickup or the preamp? I would check out the preamp first by taking the guitar to a shop and plugging into one of their external preamps. If it is the preamp, then a new one is a simple, but expensive, fix. On my DeNeve I use a McIntyre Feather and a Fishman Pro EQ preamp and I am very happy. |

On my Dobro I use two cheap $10 Dickson "stick-on" pickups run through a Fishman acoustic guitar pre-amp. One is close to the bridge, the other closer to the neck. I use a "two-into-one" connector to plug them into the pre-amp. It's pretty trebly, but you can back that off with the pre-amp. It's "low-end" (and not very elegant!) but it works fine. |
