I went out and watched Jake Hooker last weekend at the Mineral Wells rodeo dance.Jake and the boys done an outstanding job at covering the old traditional standards,I just cant say enough about these guys !! Jake in his own right is not only a great vocalist but the finest bass player I ever heard,an of course you cant mention Jake's name and not think about Dickey Overbey !! Of course I've talked about it here many time before,Dickey ..hands down is the most creative and innovative steel player I have ever seen(in my opinion),you just cant leave this guy's name out when your talking about the great one's.I finally built the courage up (courtesy of Bud Light)to go talk to him and meet him on his break the other night,he was so cool,we talked shop nearly his whole break and he enlightened me on some really cool stuff.Iam not sure if Iam suppose to mention any name's,so I wont,but he informed that there are several big name's in the traditional scene down here in Texas that will be releasing some new albums in June with some of the heaviest hitting steel player this side of the Red River,so if history repeats itself,it should be nothing short of awesome,because these boy's (and girl's) now how to make a record !!!

I also love to hear both of them sing and play - I have never met Dickey - Isn't he also on the last portion of 60 Minutes??
Looks a little familiar - Just kiddin' Dickey - Luv your stuff!!!!!!!

Last time I played with Jake, he was still playing electric bass, and I was teasing him, saying I was going to lock him in a small room with an upright bass and a stack of Ray Brown records. I'm happy he made the transition.
And what a beautiful looking bass too... I love those instruments with the violin corners on them. I'll bet it complements his sound perfectly.

I love this guy. Dicky is one of my favorite steel players. I don't think you can beat him as a band player and backing up a singer. He was there when Ronnie Milsap was doing country.
The secret may be in the way he wraps his cord around the leg of the guitar. (see picture)

Yes Jake's old 5 string Kay is a beauty.
I want it, and would trade for me 4 string Kay,
if given the chance, since I play 5 string,
and Jake prefers 4.
He is a fine player; in the pocket and clean as a whistle, good intonation.
And a super singer.
Dicky is a magicien... no other word for it.
He needs to be in the hall SGHOF..
if only judging by the super heavy weight players,
staying up till 4 am to here him play
in St Louis a few years back.
These guys gave me a renaisance for the classic EARLY Ray Price,
that I had not heard in ages, and completely forgotten.
Well dressed and personable gentlemen all.
Who's the fiddler in this pic?
I can't tell, but don't think it's Bobby Flores.
So how come I have never heard that these guys have played the GOO???? |

| David, I agree with Jon....You won't hear a lot of this music outside of Texas. What Jake Hooker, Bobby Flores, Billy Matta, Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall, etc. do is play danchall music which is part of the heritage and tradition in Texas. I for one am very glad these guys are preserving the music and using great Texas steel players on their records and shows. Believe me the PSG has a strong presence in the Lone Star State. |

Jake Hooker, yet another fine former student of the Commercial Music program of South Plains College in Levelland, TX. Some other former students of note: Lee Ann Womack, Heath Wright (Ricochet), Shann Farmer (Ricochet), Ron Block (Union Station), Natalie Maines, and Yours Truly, among others.
