Here is a picture from just 3 weeks ago of Steve Howe in rehearsal for the current tour with Yes. He is playing his good ol' Stringmaster (Dual 6).

Steel in rock music?

If you want to hear his work with the Sho-Bud-ProII, listen to the CD called Relayer, by Yes.

It may not be your type of music, but it is a great testament to the steel guitar and it's use in many types of music.

I have a limited edition CD of Steve Howe and Martin Taylor playing guitars from the Scott Chinery collection. Steve is featured on one cut on a Fender non-pedal steel. He plays steel quite good.

Relayer is an awesome album.
Again not for every one, but I have played some YES in my time.
But I didn't realize he was playing a Bud on it.

Steve is a huge fan of the instrument and has played and collected steels for many years. The Stringmaster is his manistay but he has a number of pedal & non-pedal steels in his arsenal. Steve's playing is unorthodox - standard tuning or E major played with flatpick & fingers - but perfect for his music. When I interviewed him for my book he said that he was crazy about Jerry Douglas.

Steve Howe and YES are a big reason I got interested in country music.

Saw this recent tour. Steve plays the ol' Stringmaster extensively and even does one song on a squareneck Dobro!

Greg, yours is one the most interesting and surprising comments. Steve Howe/Yes to Country music? Excellant! Not a typical path, but I enjoy different ones. That squareneck was a treat, wasn't it?

Andy, I have your book and Steve's inclusion really showed your depth of research.

David L., listen to the song To Be Over on that Relayer album. THAT is the Bud. The song can be done on the E9th neck and definatley needs the pedals, rather than a lap.

Paul have you seen the concert film of YES on the Relayer tour in 1975? During "To Be Over" Steve plays the steel break standing on one foot while the other foot mashes the A & B pedals! THEN he has to jump to the Tele break! Crazy stuff!!!

I just watched 'Yessongs' from 1972 with Steve playing the slide on 'And You and I.' I love that stuff. Thanks for reminding me!

Stuart, you should head to Madison Square Garden. They are playing there very soon. Ticketmaster.com has a number of dates in the NE over the next few weeks. (they play And You and I)

Greg, I did see that. It really is fun watching such a guitar hound. He always has one strapped on and taps a few more during each song. I think he's using about 12 guitars this tour! Fenders, Gibsons, steel, Dobro, Martins, 6 string, 12 string, etc. Even a Variax.

Darvin, I'll look for that CD.

Paul,

The CD is titled "Masterpiece Guitars". There was only a small number of these pressed, but it is a fantastic CD.

As you may know, Scott Chinery had the largest guitar collection in the world, and had what was considered the most collectable guitar ever built, the D'Angelico Teardrop. Sadly, Scott died a few years ago at 40 years old, and his collection is being liquidated by his widow. This CD project was not completed until after his death, so it was only a limited edition release.

Martin Taylor plays 19 different guitars on one cut, all from the Blue Guitar collection that Chinery had made in the '90s. This is great music if you like Jazz, and was done by two of the best guitarist ever, Steve Howe and Martin Taylor. Good luck finding a copy.

I just put on Relayer after DLing from iTunes.
It had come up in discusion this week.

In the song " To Be Over",
suddenly there was this other-worldly steel solo.
I had forgotten about this and just about plotzed.

Way cool usage of steel. Buddy need not worry technique wise.
But it was a nice effect usage.

I looked above in this thread.
Paul O. thanks for the direct to it.
Too bad it took so long to get to it. LOL

One more devoted YES fan owning up.

I get goosebumps just THINKING about some of their masterpieces. A lot of steel guitar in there, and definitely sounds just right for their music.

A friend of mine plays with a pop group who are consistently top 40 now for 20 years in Spain and South America.......pure commercial pop.....but YES is the only thing they listen to on the tour bus.

Music for anyone, but specially for musicians.

another long-time Yes fan. Saw them from the third row at Universal last year...it was amazing. As sid, Steve's not a technical genius but his playing fits the music and has great "feel".
