I know Mooney did a lot of sessions with Wynn but was there any others that played steel on Wynn Stewart recordings? Great stuff. Some of Mooney's tastiest playing IMHO.

In 1968 to 69...Wynn had a steel player by the name of Cal Freeman. I was playing bass and fronting the band. I quit the band when my Dad passed away in 1969.
I have only seen Cal Freeman once since 1969. I wonder where he is??? Junior. |

Thanks fellas! I was listening to a collection of Wynn S. that a friend loaned me and thought for the most part it was Moon but a few of the tunes had a different steel sound plus the playing seemed different.
I love Ralph's playing and the Fender sound!

Studio players:
Ralph Mooney - 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972, and 1973.
Carl West - 1958, 1959, 1965.
Jimmie (Jimmy) Collins - 1966, 1967.
Junior Boyer - 1969.
Lloyd Green - 1970.
Stu Basore - 1975.
Sonny Garrish - 1977.
Jim Vest - 1978.
There's unknown session bands on dates from about 1973 to the early 1980s.
Various pickers have laid claim to demo sessions, sadly none of these have turned up, or are to poor a quality to issue.
As we can see Ralph Mooney is the main guy, and we hear him on the bulk of the 1956-1965 material.
Jimmy Collins appears on the massive 1967 hit "It's Such A Pretty World Today."
After 1969 Wynn's recordings were all over the place, Nashville, Arizona, etc .. the best 1970s stuff is generally with the guys named above from 1970 to 1978, the other material can be hit and miss, however.. even when Wynn was in a slump, he was rather fine.

Wynn Stewart opened for Buck Owens at a show in Sac. year??? Hee Haw was new, and Jerry Brighten was playing steel for Buck Owens... but the treat for me was seeing (hearing) Mooney playing steel for Wynn Stewart.... that was a nice show, and I was a 28" waist
