At the end of the film, there is a credit to "Douglas Livingston- Pedal Steel Guitar"
Doug is of course our fellow forumite Earnest Bovine.
But I don't recall hearing any steel in any of the music. Does anybody?
Doug, would you care to comment on this?

There's a scene in the beginning where Ray gets job with a hillbilly band, and the band has a steel player. |

...and wasn't the song 'Anytime'?
Doug doesn't talk much on here about his own very considerable abilities, but I do recall him saying that Ray Charles himself oversaw the session He reminded Doug that the scene being dubbed pre-dated pedals, and that the style should reflect that. Maybe 'Earnest' will chime in ( ) and give more details.
What a great credit to have on a resume!!! Well done, Doug.

That was my favorite part of that great movie. I also loved the part where the suits tell Ray that it wouldn't be prudent to record the Country western music at this time!! Then "I Can't Stop Loving You" becomes a smash. |

I thought the session was for a new artist Ray was producing, so I brought only a modern steel, Zum I think. Ray didn't tell me not to use pedals, but when he explained this was for a club scene 50 years ago, I tried to stay away from the pedals. Can you even hear it in the scene? I figured this must be for a TV show like "Biography" until the movie came out, and I heard that the musicians got screen credits (a very unusual occurrence!) |

I rember that scene and noticing that the steel playing and sound heard was not typical of the instrument (a non pedal console) seen on the scene. But then, most who went to see that great movie where maybe not steel guitarists.
