The Art of Hawaiian Guitar, Volume 2

I saw a note in Sing Out magazine that said that Stacy Phillips is coming out with a Volume 2 of The Art of Hawaiian Guitar. I'm a big fan of the original The Art of Hawaiian Guitar - it's full of great information and it's about the only instructional book available that covers "vintage" Hawaiian steel music.

I exchanged a few emails with Stacy to get the details. He said it's okay to make them public in case anyone else is looking forward to the publication.

It'll cover the same style and era as the first volume. Here's a list of the contents:

The book will come with a CD. The CD may have some original recordings (they have to get clearances for them). The rest will be Stacy playing the tune.

The publication date isn't set, but I contacted Mel Bay and they said it will probably be issued in the fall. Stacy said if enough people bug Mel Bay about it they may move up the publication date

Hula Girl and Waters of the Minnetonka caught my eye. I asked about them and, as I had hoped, the Hula Girl tab is based on the Sol Hoopii recording and Waters of the Minnetonka is based on the Jim and Bob version. Those are two of my favorite tunes and ones that I'd like to learn.

I love the way Stacy teaches. You get more out of one of his videos that you get out of videos done by bigger names, simply because Stacy knows how to teach and most of the big names don't (at least in the videos I've seen so far).
