1937 photo of Leon McAuliffe (far right) with the Texas Playboys. I got it on Ebay, it was from an Oklahoma estate. There is a list of the player's names on a seperate sheet. It has Bob Will's autograph which looks authentic but can't be proven, although a crease in the photo does goe right across the autograph.
Just thought I'd post it to see if anyone has more info or comments on the photo. Thanks.

Nice photo Bill. I believe Bob Wills & Spade Cooley had the biggest bands in C&W music,in those days.

I would like to thank Evelyn Granny Beavers
(Randy's mom)of Tulsa for her email to me with wonderful memories: Leon, Eldon, Speedy West, Johnny Lee Wills and her families ties to them. Randy being brought up with these players. The ballrooms and radio shows. Evelyn is sure that it is Bob's signature on the photo. Thank you so much for the information and heartfelt reflections!

That's a 14 piece band if I didn't miss anyone which brings up the some questions.

How many nights a week did they usually work and what kind of money did they make?

Dick, Bob and the boys played several nights a week and didn't do to bad moneywise. In a book I have about Bob, it tells in there that in 1944 Bob made somewhere around 400,000 dollars for the year. It also says he paid his band members accordingly. That factor always impressed me. In their day Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys were band of bands in their genre of music.

WOW! I would have never imagined them making that kind of money back then.

Thanks Craig.
