I know alot of these guitars are stashed away as collecters items. Just curious. How many of you folks are playing them out live? The only one I can think of is Jeremy Wakefield. I've seen him sounding fabulous on his at gigs several times.

I did gig out with "Jerry Gerard" regularly during the two years I spent with James Hand. Pete Mitchell, the lead guitarist, gave me so much grief about having a Bigsby and not playing it, that I caved in and used it quite a bit on that retro-style band.

I also played the 10-10-8 PA Reissue that was yours previously a few times, but "Jerry Gerard" stayed in tune better due to the wood necks.

That was the only extended period of time I spent using guitars of that type.

Back in the 1960's, I used it exclusively for dances and live television HOWEVER, as the Nashville Sound became more prominent, folks simply could not understand why I couldn't play this guitar and make it sound just like Lloyd Green or others since after all, it did have six pedals.
Not only the general public but other non-steel playing professionals as well, simply have no comprehension of what the a 8 x 4 set-up is/does. Thus, carrying that 105 pounds around was really an effort in futility.

Herb, glad to hear you got the 10 10 8 out there!! I hope you found something better than the monsterous purple flight case to carry it around in.

The Radio Ranch Straight Shooters, in a short reunion, did a series of shows at a club in Hollywood, a while back , and I took out the S-10. I've also done a few sessions with the D-8 lap guitar into a Standel.

I do, in fact I will next Saturday. Here people usually respect the stage and leave your instruments alone so I'm not really that worried about taking it out. It does draw curious people though, as do all steel guitars. I've taken it on a flight ( checked it ) twice without any damage happening. Those were transatlantic flights where you're allowed to take heavy stuff, flights inside European continent are a different matter. On those gigs I usually take the Sho Bud. Right now I'm more concerned about the Bigsby case than the guitar itself, I want to keep the case in good shape too like it is so I gotta start planning for a road case for it.
Edit: just had to add this: http://www.swingandcountry.com/images/GreenBay2/05Friday/01ThreeClans/06HankThompson/Hank01.jpg

Jussi, you and JW look totally fabulous together. And in all the gigs I've done with Hank T., he never dressed up like that! He must have enjoyed the gig.

Billy
The purple monstrosity flight case is a major problem. For one, it doesn't fit in my Explorer, and it takes two grown men to carry it. Since I'm not gigging out with the guitar, the case situation is not a major issue right now. If I ever do put it into rotation, I'll have to get a double-case set made for it. For now I carry it in a large padded keyboard gig bag with a rifle bag for the legs and pedal rack.

Drew thanks, I had no idea how to post it here except the old "copy & paste"!

And thank you Herb!! That was a fun gig, I too hope Hank enjoyed it like we did. I met him at the Casino's restaurant day before the show and asked him if he would like the idea of two Bigsbys on stage. His reply was "oh heck yeah, that would look great!!" Of course Hank's set nowadays is not about steel solos so we didn't even bother to learn any of the twin stuff, instead we just concentraded on looking good

Looked good sounded good. It was quite an amazeing sight to see 2 Bigsbys being played on the same stage at the same time. Jussi you were surely missed in Vegas. These guitars need to be played, and giged so they can be truely appreciated. Its a shame that some of these instruments are kept hidden away. Gary Lambert played his double neck guitar in Vegas for the Dekes guitar geek part of the Viva Las Vegas weekender, and seeing that made the trip worth it.
