I'm going to plead ignorance on this, but I see the term "Bump" used, usually it is the only word in the comment. What does it mean?

Bump---to the top. When the thread starts getting buried that will bump it back up. |

All the threads in the "Today's Active Topics" list are wiped out at midnight West Coast time. The threads are still in the individual subject sections. But the only way to keep a topic in the "Today's Active Topics" list is to post a reply every day. This also temporarily bumps the thread to the top in the individual subject list, thus the term "bump." |

It's simply an acronym for Bringing Up My Post (or something similar) if my memory serves me right. Took me a couple of months to discover.

It's kind of a placeholder.
"And thirdly, the Code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules."
"Hang the code, and hang the rules. They're more like guidelines anyway."

It stands for Brumberger's Uber Message Placement. It is a trademarked and patented mechanism developed by Adolph Brumberger in the early days of the Internet. Unfortunately, a royalty must be payed each time the word is used to bump a message to the top of the screen much as you would pay a royalty for singing "Happy Birthday". Ebay and Apple have been in a costly lawsuit around this very issue.
It is one of the reason's b0b's monthly nut is so high: use with discretion. |

dont forget the dreaded "ghost bump".
Thats where you bump a thread and then delete your post so it rises to the the top for apparently no reason.
I dont think we can delete our posts on this forum tho so no ghost bumping around here. |
