I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR ANYTHING ON CD AND ESPECIALLY ANYTHING RECORDED LIVE. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THERE IS SO LITTLE RECORDED OF THE WORLDS GREATEST STEEL GUITAR PLAYER. IT IS REALLY SAD AND SUCH A GREAT LOST TO ALL STEEL PLAYERS AROUND THE WORLD. I HAD THE HONOR OF HEARING JULIAN LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS IN THE LATE EIGHTYS AND BOUGHT THE ALBUM SOUTHERN FRIED STEEL FROM HIM. LISTENED TO IT MANY, MANY TIMES, BUT AS ALL OF YOU KNOW THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A LIVE RECORDING OR A SIT DOWN JAM. I HAVEN'T PLAYED STEEL FOR MANY YEARS AND IS JUST NOW GETTING BACK TO PLAYING MY BMI AND THAT ONE NIGHT WITH JULIAN IS STILL FRESH IN MY MIND. I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT HIS DEATH. WE ARE ALL AT A LOST. SUCH A WONDERFUL AND NICE PERSON TO HAVE MEET. WITH ALL YOUR HELP, HIS MUSIC WILL LIVE ON

James you can buy a Cassette of "Take Your Pick" by Julian Tharpe from the Steel Forum here by clicking on CD's & Tapes at the top of your screen and scrolling down to Julian Tharpe. I have several Albums by Julian. He was an amazing and great player who was one of a kind. I too wish I had more of his recordings or Videos if I could find them.
By the way James welcome to the Steel Forum.

THANKS ROGER, FOR THE INFO, JUST GETTING BACK INTO PLAYING, THE FIRST THING I DID WAS DIG UP ALL MY LP'S OF JULIAN, BUDDY AND MR. ANDERSON. I NO LONGER HAVE A RECORD PLAYER OR A CASSETTE PLAYER AND WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE ANTHING ON CD, STUDIO OR ESPECIALLY LIVE. I WENT TO MY FIRST PSG CONVENTION IN DALLAS THIS YEAR AND WON'T BE THE LAST. I VISITED THE MSA ROOM WHERE I HEARD SOME OF THE BEST JAMMING THAT YOU WILL HEAR ANYWHERE. TO ME, LIVE PLAYING IS THE BEST BECAUSE IT IS COMING FROM THE HEART AND SOUL AND DOING WHAT THEY FEEL AND NOT TOLD. IT IS A LOST THAT THESE EVENTS ARE UNRECORDED. I WOULD GLADLY DONATE TO THE CAUSE, BEFORE WE LOSE ANOTHER GREAT PLAYER

Wasn't there some "talk" of someone putting out a CD of Julian's music? I have that tape "Take Your Pick" and IMO it's great.

James T.,

Julian was just inducted as the very first steel guitar player in the Alabama Steel Guitar Hall of fAme on February 26th. Check the posting out here on the ALABAMA STEEL ASSOCIATION it is under Events and Announcements!

Julian's family were all present for the event and it was great. His son Greg and grandson Shaun may possibly be releasing a cd of Julian's playing in the near future.
That is in the works and it is material that none of us have ever heard. His son Greg is a producer and plays guitar.

Next, there was talk of another source to release a cd too but I haven't heard anything on that for several months.

I wrote a song and did record a cd titled "A Tribute to Julian Tharpe," a few years ago and have a few copies left of it. Nobody does or ever will play exactly like Julian. He was the most unique steel guitarist I ever heard. Like Speedy West, and Zane Beck, Julian and these guys all sounded unlike others. I have been told that I sound somewhat like Julian. I am truly honored and flattered by that, but as mentioned nobody played or plays like him.

Speedy, Zane and Julian were my friends and Julian was my mentor. I miss him a bunch. thanks GOD we have the recordings we do have of him.

GOD bless you!
