On the now closed thread on whole tone scales, the question was aked whether anybody ever improvised with them on steel.

The answer is yes. Curly Chalker played some whole tone scales on some of the songs on his Counterpoint LP. I seem to recall hearing him use them on "For once In My Life" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

There's an album that needs to be reissued on CD.

I wish they would put Counterpoint out on CD as I literally wore out my cassett of it. Now I am in the process of wearing out my cassett of Nevada Breaks. The tune selection on there my be a little generic but the steel solos are like a big fat plate of bar-b-que from the best joint in East Oakland, Juicy and greaZy

LP--is that the old, giant CD people used to sell?

I really want this. Since you posted about it in the other thread, I've been searching and searching.

Adrienne, the LP is called 'Counterpoint" and has never been released on CD. Tom Bradshaw re-released it along with another of Chalker's records "Big hits On bog Steel" as a 2 record (LP) set.

Perhaps somebody here who has the records can burn a CD for you.

The "Giants Of Swing" LP/CD is a different recording entirely.

Adrienne, I bought a cassette version a couple of years back from Al Brisco (www.steelguitarcanada.com). I just checked his website and all I see on there by Curly is "More Ways to Play", which to me is also essential listening, including as it does Curly's legendary "Long Black Limousine".

I recently exchanged emails with Tom Bradshaw and he informed me he is working on trying to put some of Curly's recordings on CD, both live and studio work. There will never be enough available of Curly's one-of-a-kind playing to suit me. He truly is unmatched by anyone.
