I saw Tommy play Saturday night. He looked really weekI saw him out front of the hotel in the afternoon he was in a power wheelchair, but when he got on stage his voice was not weak when he talked and his playing was definitly not weak. He sounded great.

And he hasn't lost his sense of humor, I was looking for a working ice machine Sunday evening and got into the elevator with him. He looked at the silver ice bucket with a handle and said "Man what you got in that thing, Kryptonite?"

Tom Morrell and the Time Warp Top Hands

I am embarassed to say I had not heard Tom Morrell play until Saturday night. He is just a brilliant musician. His taste, touch, and rhythm are impeccable, and the jazz lines he pulls out of a 10 string fixed tuning are astonishing, and would be remarksble no matter what the instrument. I'm so glad I stayed up for that midnight set!

Tom Morrel can get music,,,beautiful music out of anything,,,a remarkably talented man,,,a true artist,,,who probably won't get the recognition he deserves in this lifetime (as so many true artist)!!! It was very heartbreaking to see him in that condition,,,,I understand he's had a very bad year.

Many have said "Tom's a genius". Even in his condition,he still played great swing. The arrangements between Tom, Rich, Leon and the fiddles were definitely worth staying up for. That's my kind of music. Dale

10 strings, eh? Is his tuning public knowledge?
I have the album he did with the Playboy alumni & he played his Bigsby on that! I love it. Tommy Allsup & Leon Rausch.....great music! I think the liner notes credited Buddy Spicher as having done the arranging (sp)

Hey, I've seen Morrell every year there for the past 5 and he's always good but I had my doubts because his health is clearly not good. Let me tell you, he put on a freakin' clinic Saturday night. That was the best I've heard him play.

JB is exactly correct. I too have heard Tommy play each year for the last 6 years. I saw him his wheelchair and thought that he would not be able to play this year. Boy was I wrong. I had a friend from Florida who had not heard Tom and the band before and he was completely blown away. I told several people in Dallas and several since my return that Saturday Night was the very best that I had ever heard him. Not to take anything away from his other performances but he was sharp as a tack and the band was incredible. Parts galore and great singing. Tom conducted the band to perfection. The sit-in piano player was poetry in motion and sound.

Tom is a master musician.

For those who haven't heard it, in the CDs and Tapes section of the forum (link above) the duo recording Tom did with Maurice Anderson in the '70's entitled "Sextet Sessions" features mind blowing, out of this world amazing playing from both. I believe Tom was using 5 fingerpicks on pedal steel back then.

Russ, haven't you heard of the double-thumb technique?

I meant thumbpick and 4 fingerpicks...at least that's what I read somewhere...

My friend, Calvin Volrath (he was the other fiddler in Brin Sklar's band at the Carter room) was totally blown away by Tom Morrel. He couldn't say enough about him. Calvin is also a brutally good fiddler who swings like crazy.
