I hope I picked the right area to introduce myself. My logic was that it did say steel players and their music, and I'm somewhat of a steel player....
I started getting involved in music when I was about 6yrs old. My Dad loved Johnny Cash's version of the Walbash Cannonball and had me memorize the vocals. Any time someone would come over, he would have me sing it for them. When I was in 2nd grade, my teacher had me go to every class in the grade school and sing it to them. I bought my first guitar when I was 8. Started playing in a band at 15. I've taken lessons on the guitar through the years to get me over a few humps. I'm the type of learner that does better after seeing someone do something once.
I started playing steel after I found myself playing quite a bit of traditional country. I learned mostly by feeling out the instrument and a bit out of books. I just got my Dobro at Christmas and playing steel helped me feel that out fairly quickly.
I enjoy just about any type of music, but listen to mainly classic rock, country rock, country, and blues. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you on this fine forum and hopefully learning a few things on the way. I wish I would've found this long ago.

| Now Don, as a new guy myself I can appreciate your situation so here's a couple of suggestions which will help, First don't mention banjo cause that hurts man, Rock and Country Rock are okay and blues too for that matter but you want to lean toward the country part with a little bit of western in the mix just to get your foundation right. You know artists like Ray Price, George Jones, Buck Owens, Haggard, George Strait, Alan Jackson, I hope you get the idea. And any steel guitar cd's which are available through various outlets, just pay attention to the forum son, and you'll find them and pick up the cd's by players like Buddy Emmons, John Hughey, Paul Franklin, Ron Elliott, Russ Hicks, Jimmy Crawford, Hal Rugg, Doug Jernigan, Buddy Charleton, those for starters, the boys in texas have a bunch of players there that they'll tell you about cause I can't think of all of them, but there is a bunch of them out there not the least is Ralph Mooney etc. Well good luck and write if you find work. |

Welcome to the Forum. I'm affectionately known as Miss Lana from SteelRadio.com. An Internet radio station that plays nothing but steel guitar music 24/7. And we play it all, C&W, Western Swing, Rock, Jazz, and of course, the Blues.
The steel is a versatile instrument and needs to be exercised. Take a listen to pickers like Dave Ristrim, Sneaky Pete, Buzz Evans, and Joe Wright - to name a few and see where they have taken the steel. I just saw Dave on TV with Lonestar doing a mean Dobro as well.
All these pickers can tear your sole out with traditional country or heat things up in other genres (rock, jazz, blues). And, I'm sure you'll be looking for a preacher to repent when some of these fellas play gospel.
Best thing about it, you can talk to almost all of them right here on the Forum. Questions, comments, etc. This place is a wealth of information and quite a kinship.

Thanks for all of the replies. You folks don't need to worry about the banjo too much. Note in my profile it says it is for aggravation!!!!!! So far it has given me more ambition to go after steelin'. I'm not at the level that many of you are on this forum, but I still enjoy playing steel a lot.

I've been doing instrument and electrical work for about 28 years now. I work at a pulp and paper mill right on the Michigan border. I enjoy that a lot too. Right now the paper business is in rough shape, but I think the survivors should be in business for a long time.

| Hey Mike I met you about a hundurd years ago at the St. Louis convention about 1989, and was blown away by the fact that Hartley would allow his people come up to St.Louis set up with Peavey gear and do the entire sound for the convention and though I haven't been to Dallas since 1994? you guys are still at it. Unbelievable!!! How about it forumites is that dedication to an instrument that still isn't that common in all music fields. And as I recall Mike you mentioned a story about Hartley at the St. Louis show in 1989 about a board meeting with the number crunchers and how they were going to discontinue the then Nashville 400 because it wasn't selling enough units to make it worthwhile and Hartley said negatory on scrapping the amp. That the company was continuing and has in fact continued to upgrade amps and other products for the Pedal Steel Guitar. So Mike Thank You and Hartley for stickin' with us. |
