Can anyone recommend music stores or pawn shops in these towns? I am looking for an 8 string lap steel. |

Unfortunately I can't recommend anything directly. You might grab a copy of Vintage Guitar magazine to see if any dealers in those cities advertise their inventories. Otherwise I'd recommend a trip to the GuitarBase web site. You can search for those particular cities or see the inventories of a number of different stores.

Gus Zoppi's in Detroit used to have some great used stuff. There was a fantastic acoustic oriented store on Woodward around 12 mile road, but I think it's gone or moved... I got some great instruments there in the early 80's.

Gus Zoppi's was on 8 mile (yes "the" 8 mile) in Warren. In their day they were a big music store that catered to Rock and Rollers, High School trumpet players as well as Italian and Polish accordion bands. I bought my first Martin guitar from Zoppi's when I was in High School. I also bought a used three row diatonic accordion from them when I was in my Cajun/Zydeco music phase. A very cool store with an eclectic clientele.
The 8 mile store has since closed and the family opened a smaller store in Sterling Heights. I haven't been there in years but the last time I visited I was not too impressed.
The acoustic store that Mark mentioned is Junkyard Guitars. They are on Woodward Ave.("the" Woodward Ave., the first paved road in the USA) near 13 mile. Last time I was there they had a few Fender six string steels that were appropriately priced.
Or Mark may have been referring to Musician's Friend. They were a hippy music store focused on acoustic instruments. They are no longer. I think they actually moved out west and formed the Musician's Friend mail order mega-catalog.
When I was in college I used to teach guitar there. A 13 year old Jimmy Olander now of the Diamond Rio band taught Bluegrass banjo there as well. Jimmy and I would frequently jam while waiting for our students to arrive. We sold a lot of instruments for that store.

I bought a Sho-Bud PSG at Gallagher's music on W. Warren Rd back in '82'. That neighbourhood then was a workin' man's area with lots of country bars etc. Gallagher carried Sho-Bud and Fender products & a full line of steel accessories (if my fuzzy memory serves me). But that district is all Mexican & Arab now... I dont know if they moved or went out of biz |

Bob's music in Lima, Ohio sells Sierra steels, Carter starters, and has a number of used steels (and lap steels last I knew).
Bob himself passed away around Christmas time in an accident, but last I knew his wife was keeping the store going.
You might want to call to see what they have. Super nice people to do business with.
Bob's passing is a great loss to musicians in the area.
