Junior Brown is a true original IMHO!!!
He took the styles of several pickers & molded them together to get his sound.
They man can pick & sing > what a talent..
He makes them Fender Twin Reverb amps just
light up too with his tone...Ron

I simply love Junior's playing style, and that tune is one of my favorites. My blues band always kicks off our gigs with that tune ... to set the mood so to speak ... followed by a more traditional blues shuffle.

One of the guys that I work,(Dennis Payne) wrote his "Highway Patrol". Dennis is,also, the nephew of the late songwriter,Leon Payne, who had a few hits in his day too.

Love Junior, His new Live CD from the Continental Club in Austin is great too, as well as 'Downhome Chrome'.

An interseting fact is that Junior is related not far back to Abraham Lincoln. Junior got rid of his beard years ago though.

Actually, Dennis Payne co-authored "Highway Patrol" with Bakersfield song writer and recording artist Red Simpson when Dennis lived in Bakersfield

Gotta seem him Live! (and I mean really Live). I was lucky enough to get front row seats in the original Palms Playhouse (Davis, CA) and from the front row you could rest your feet on the stage (risers). This was when he had his first album out..... one of the best times I've had. Man, he must know every slant postition ever invented.

Junior plays with tremendous energy and can mix it up too. EX: on the Semi-Crazy CD there is humor, despair and something to scratch your surf guitar itch. Also, on the "I Hung it Up" cut, he rips on both sides of his guitsteel.

Junior Brown live is amazing! I saw him about 8 years ago at the University of Buffalo. He tore it up. His drummer did a big solo (with only high hat and snare) that was amazing too. They filmed it and were supposed to release the video but never have. I think they played it on public TV once too. Can't wait to hear that new CD!

Somebody told him he sounded like Ernest Tubb on acid. Junior said he was more like Hendrix on moonshine.

Related to Lincoln? Ain't that a hole in the head.

...his "Semi Crazy" must be the ultimate trucking song, with some really GREAT pedal steel on it.
This guy has chops enough for a dozen pickers!

I'm a fan of Junior too. He names his guitsteels. His yellow guitsteel is named "Old Yeller" and his red one is nicknamed "Big Red". The steel bodies on Junior's guitsteels are Fender lap steels. "My Wife Thinks You're Dead" is a hilarious song! I think he plays a Bigsby pedal steel, too. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

Junior usually plays his famous Guit-Steel, but I think he also owns a Sho Bud LDG.

I think Junior owns a Bigsby pedal steel too. In an interview, Junior said his favorite steels went as far as Sho-Bud. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

He plays pedals and plays them well but only once in a while on his records like "Parole Board" (perhaps the saddest prison song ever written). I've met him and seen him live a number of times and he always plays that infernal contraption. He can truly play anything that needs played with no pedals. -MJ-
