I was knocked out by Johnny Cox Friday night at Pearls Dancehall in Fort Worth. He stopped by after his early gig to see "Kelly Spinks and Miles Of Texas" perform. They got him up to set in on Rooster Crow's Emmons, and you should have heard him! It's gotta be tought to play someone elses rig, (It's tough enough on a six stringer) but you'd have thought he had been playing that guitar all his life. Rooster is a fine player also, and was also knocked out. Way to go Johnny! I sure enjoyed it! |

Johnny is one of my all-time favorite players (and friends -- you to Joan)! He downplays the fact he can sit down at anyone's steel and play it like it was his. Johnny is truly one of the most gifted musical giants in my eyes.
PS...hey Johnny, so you were playing on an EMMONS--a p/p? Wait till Tom McDonald sees this post -- Emmons...you must have really sounded great! HA HA Love ya brother!

Seems like some of the top professional steel guitarists can sit down at someone elses guitar and play it, as if it was their own. Johnny happens to be one of those few players who can do this.
I met Johnny in Minneapolis, when he was 17 years old. He was playing A Sho-Bud S-14 ala Julian Tharpe w/Jim Ed Brown.

I was priveledeged to be at one of Jeff Newman's last June Jams when Johnnie played every guitar on stage. That ran the entire gamut of possibilities. Jeff's universal, Jimmy Day's set up, Lloyd Green's "don't lower your E's" set up, Sho-Bud knee/Emmons pedal, standard Emmons...you name it. He would take a quick look at the endplate
to see what the pulls were doing and then play the dickens out of it just like it was his own. I'll never forget that!

Living as I do out here on the upper left edge I had not had much exposure to Johnny Cox's playing UNTIL I received my copy of the "Operation Russless" Pranksters' CD and heard his work behind Laney Hicks' vocals on "You Don't Have Very Far to Go" - Holy Cow, THAT made me sit up straight in my chair and pay attention!
BTW if you don't know about this CD or haven't heard it yet, by all means get a copy and dig in, this one's a keeper for sure. Since I got it I start out nearly every day sitting down at the steel and putting it on to study and play with, but by the time I get to Johnny and Lloyd I'm just sitting there dumbfounded, feeling like I don't have very much to show for the last thirty-odd years of pickin' after all. |

Thanks Chuck and everyone else for the kind words. I enjoyed meeting Keely and his great group. Rooster was very kind to have me up to play a few. I always try to get to Pearls when I am in Ft. Worth. It's the best club in Texas for real deal country.
Chuck, I'll see you at the Finish Line on the 18th.
