Did anyone get to see the screening of Neil Young - Heart of Gold at Sundance this year? Not sure how many Utahns are on the forum, but I've seen a few.

After Neil Young found out about his aynurism, he decided to record an album and also to play a show in Nashville. I'm wondering how many of you out there went to that show and when was it? I know the record is fairly new.

I'm new to steel and was so motivated by Ben Keith, if I remember his name right? Would like to know some other stuff he's done. I know he did a lot of recording for Neil's.

The film is mostly live footage, but is very good if anyone ever gets a chance to see it. It's good to see some old guys still playing the old songs and people still love it. And Neil was playing Hank's guitar!

I too am a Ben Keith and Neil Young fan. I found an Emmy Lou Harris album with Mr. Keith on one cut, in the .50 cent bin in an old record store this weekend. When i asked the owner of the shop if he had a country section he pointed to twelve or so milkcrates of records buried under a ten foot stack of antique toys and said "no one wants to buy them". I said "I do!" but he wouldnt dig em out for me

Cant wait to see this movie. I saw Neil on the International Harvesters tour back in 84 or 85 but I was too young and drunk/high to remember much. I am sure Ben Keith was on steel for that....but at that point I wouldnt have known a steel guitar from a trombone.

There's a version of Neil's latest CD "Prairie Wind" that comes with a DVD movie of every song as it was recorded for the album. Ben Keith plays (beautifully) on just about every track. He also produced it. If you go into the DVD menus there's an extensive discography of what records he's appeared on. The essential Neil Young ones are "Harvest", "Tonight's The Night" and "On the Beach". Emmylou's "Pieces of the Sky" and "Elite Hotel" are great records too. Good places to start if you like Ben Keith.

He's also co-author of Winnie Winston's famous "Pedal Steel Guitar" book and CD (still in print).

Actually that's Bill Keith, not Ben, on Winston's book. Ben Keith was, however, the steel player on Patsy Cline's I fall to pieces(!)

Yes, you're quite right Dan, my apologies for the confusion. I bet they get that the whole time.

Here's a good Ben Keith discography to make up for my blunder.

Our local newspaper's film critic reported back from Sundance that "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" was a truly great concert film. Directed by Jonathan Demme (who also made "Stop Making Sense") and recorded at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

It's playing at a film festival here next month, and hopefully, it will be out on DVD at some point.

someone asked if there was more ben keith out there and there is, go to a store and look for Johnathan Edwards, the album that i have is the one with him standing in a doorway on the front, has songs:shanty, sunshine, emma, don't cry blue...good album and the songs without ben are worth having too,, some of my favorite country folk stuff, sort of like crosby stills and nash without the super lush harmonies. or, if you can't find it or want to trade something, i can do that too, peace
