Went to the NAMM show in Aniheim yesterday and though I would post a review of the Magnum guitars by Carter.
When I walked up to the Carter booth, Billy Phelps was sitting there picking as good a ever on a new Magnum D-10. As I watched Billy play, I was impressed with the tone he was getting both on the E9th neck and C6th neck too. But, Billy would sound good on any guitar he sat down at though!
I looked at the fit and finish of the overall construction and was very impressed by the clean and precise fit every place I looked. It appeared to be "very" stable and did not "dance" around at all as Billy mashed the pedals and pushed the KL's as he played the tar out it!
I sat down after giving the strings a change to cool off from Billy's hot picking and spent the next 45 min's having a ball playing that new Magnum.
It play's like a dream! Smooooooooooooooth as silk on both the pedals and KL's, with out even a hint of "mush" in the pull train. The stop's on both pedals and KL's felt solid when you hit'em and the entire guitar felt great.
John Fabian told me the E9th pick-up is in the 18 - 18.5 range with C6th being around 20ish. Both necks sounded very nice through the 2 Nashville 112's it was running through. (first time I have been able to play through those bad boy's too WOW!) I would take the Magnum to any gig or session I was doing and never worry about it doing the job for me, a first class working guitar if I ever saw one.
You just could not go wrong spending you money on this guitar, it will do the job!
It's a cut above the "Carter-Starter"(also a great value for the $) on all fronts and would be a perfect "next-step" guitar for anyone out growing their "Starter".
Since I brought up the "Carter-Starter", I'd like to also mention Billy's CD "Starterized". As soon as we hit the Fwy on the way home, I put the CD in the player and was treated to some more hot playing by Mr. Phelps. Billy plays all the steel parts on the CD on a "Carter-Starter" and it's all good stuff! He also plays all the other instruments to boot! Recommended listening here!
