Cast your vote for the 2003 Hawaii Music Awards:
http://www.hawaiimusicawards.com/
Deadline is March 3, 2004.
Also cast a vote of disbelief by sending them an email informing them that you are disappointed that there is no Hawaiian Steel guitar category.
An email form is on their site.
Always an uphill battle...(even in Hawaii!)

Gerald,
Consider it done. The following was just sent to them.
quote: Gentleman,
I find it appalling that you do NOT have a Hawaiian Guitar category for your casting of votes in the 2003 Hawaii Music Awards.
When one considers that the Hawaiian
Guitar is one of but two musical instruments that can be claimed by Americans; not to mention that it WAS created in HI; along with the fact that MOST informed musicians believe the Hawaiian Guitar is part and parcel of true Hawaiian music; I find it disconcerting and absurd you would not have this in the forefront of any voting for Hawaiian music.
Shame on whomever is responsible for this lack of keeping with historical fact.

Thanx for the post and info Gerald! They just heard from me about getting an award catagory for the steel, and I hope they're listening. If everybody who reads this post will do the same, maybe it will become an obviously needed reality. |

I suggest taking a positive approach when writing to express your desire to have a steel guitar category included in the Hawaiian Music Awards. Bring out the benefits of having such a category, how steel guitar has enriched Hawaiian musical culture, how it is unique in all the world's music, etc.
Generally speaking, writing an angry letter usually just makes the reader angry and gets you nowhere, or worse, has a negative effect.[This message was edited by Bob Stone on 02 March 2004 at 05:52 AM.] |

I agree with Bob Stone. A positive letter will achieve more and accomplish the goal.

...they heard from me.
I have had people tell me that they do not like country music; some do not like rock and roll, country-rock, popular, classical, etc. But, I have never had anyone tell me that they do not like Hawaiian steel guitar music,___never.

Great news!
Here is the response I just received from the HMA:

Aloha Robert,
Thank you for your concern. We are going to extend an invitation to HSGA to validate a category for us. We hope the steel guitar recording artist will enter their CDs in the future to help promote the Steel Guitar honors.
What do you think?
Mahalo, Johnny Kai

I assured him the category would get lots of support.

Can someone name some Hawaiian Steel Guitar CDs that came out in 2003 that might qualify for this category?
I'm stumped... |

I would imagine that a yearly award could be given for an exemplary "sideman", a Hawaiian Steeler who contributes to another musician's CD.
These types of awards happen in the Jazz world... best drummer, sax etc.

Well Gerald.........it sounds like you were describing ME.........but then again, I could be wrong. The Manny K Fernandez CD of "In This Enchanted Place" is in category 13, I believe it is. I had the honor of playing on that one. Care to cast a vote for MANNY?
What is the address of: The Aloha Steel Guitar Assn.? or whatever it is.[This message was edited by Ray Montee on 02 March 2004 at 01:52 PM.] |

Richie Chofoe's 'Steel My Heart' may be the only steel guitar CD entry, as it was the only one mentioned by Johnny Kai in his reply to me.
And for the record, my Email to them was VERY nice.
Love and kisses to all! |

I could not be so kind:
quote: Hey, where's the beef!
With Hawaiian Steel Guitar being the ONLY melodic instrument indigenous to Hawaii and probably the most profound instrument of Hawaiian Music heritage, ...and a Hawaiian (Steel) Guitar category absent in your Hawaii Music Awards, ...while "jawaiian" is present in styles of some categories; Who of a meaningful Hawaiian Music or professional sense ...or caring for Hawaiian heritage and future for Musicians to aspire to, and the public to remain aware of..., can view your awards as a valid representation of Hawaiian Music? Not I.
With due respect, I cannot help but view such an ommission rather similar to promoting jet-skis while forgetting the Hawaiian Canoe, or fast food while ignoring the Luau, or Disco over the Hula, or Christmas trees over the Coconut Palm, and Bob Marley over Aunty Genoa Keawe.
Aloha,
