I am heading to Franklin, TN for the Thanksgiving weekend. The Mrs. and myself are looking for some suggestions on where to see some hot pickin' over Nov. 25-27. I think Franklin is only 15-20 miles away from Nashville...is this correct? What clubs/bars are recommended to see some good classic country music? What places should we avoid in Nashville?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!
Mark

There are about 6 or 8 bars all within a one block area on lower Broadway not too far from the Ryman Auditorium. I was in N'ville a couple of weeks ago and went to Legends, Tootsies and Second Fiddle and saw three awsome players. If you get a chance to see James Shelton at Second Fiddle, do it, and find out which set he'll be doing Steel Guitar Rag - he rocked the place. Great technique and a nice guy. Charley the steel player at Tootsies told me that JD Maness had jest left - I was standing next to him and didn't know it!

Basically you can wander between the three bars all night long. I've seen good steel players from 2:00 pm to 2:00 am. There's plenty of parking (for a fee) just behind Gruhn Guitars (you gotta check that store out too). The Ernest Tubb record shop across the street has some good stuff, including a section devoted to Steel Players.

Enjoy, and don't forget to tip the band.

"What places should we avoid in Nashville?"

The Interstates and Briley Parkway. They're all under construction. You could sit there for hours. Check out www.tdot.state.tn.us/information-office/const.htm before you drive anywhere in Gnashville.

Thanks guys! Looks like lower broadway is the hot ticket!

So...are there "cover" charges to get in these bars? What is a typical door charge on lower broadway. In Chicago we are at about $7 a person for a local band and about $12-$15/person for a bigger semi-famous act.

Thanks!
Mark

Mark,
No charge at the bars on lower broad.
I suggest you also pick up a "Nashville Scene" paper at any mini mart.
Have fun!

I can't wait to get down there! The country music scene in Chicago is DEAD. I mean DEAD. If you're a steel player in Chicago it is REAL tough to find a gig. Looking forward to getting to Nashville to hear some hot pickin'

That's great news about "no cover charge" at the clubs. I will be sure to tip the band very well!

Cheers!

If you get to the Gatlinburg area (a real pretty town, by the way), be sure to check out the "Classic Country Theater". Also, the Steamboat ride (forget what that's called) behind Opryland has some good entertainment!

Hey Guys,

I returned from Nashville and had a BLAST! Broadway St. had lots of action and caught a ton of good country music. My favorite place was "Roberts". Wasn't too crowded and we could get a seat and they had cheap beer and a hot pickin' band. I also liked "Layla's Bluegrass Inn". We actually caught a bluegrass band there (I heard that don't book much bluegrass there anymore). Tootsie's was SUPER crowded and could barely get in the door. The same was for Legends...just too crowded to even walk in the bar. The Mrs. and I managed to get to the Ryman, Hall of fame, ET's record shop and just about every bar on broadway. Sure is different than Chicago! TONS of steel pickin' in Nashville!

Thanks for all of the suggestions...we had a ball!

Cheers!

Do they get mad if you don't drink? I don't mind a cover charge, but my constitution can't handle booze or sugar anymore.

b0b,

Well, we stayed at each place long enough for a beer or a coke. I would imagine the staff might get a little heated if you didn't order at least something.

Just rememberred this funny story. While watching this bluegrass band at Layla's, there was a really drunk couple sitting at the table next to my wife and I. The band played "In the Pines" and the couple next to us started getting "hot and heavy". I have no idea why "In the Pines" set them off, but man o man they were going at it! At one point during the song, her shirt almost came all the way off! Ah....the memories!

"In the pines, in the pines where the sun never shines And we shiver when the cold wind blows!"

HAHA can't stop laughing about it!

I guess that's one big reason why pickin jobs on Broadway have always been such low~paying jobs! People either can't or won't spend enough to cover a decent wage! Musicians have to depend mainly on the ‘Tip~Jar’ to pay their way home! Oh-Yeah, I guess their regular wage pays for their Parking~Fees! It's not a place to make a living for most musicians, although there are a few singers who have been there almost all their adult lives and are still working! Otherwise, it's a place strictly for FUN & Entertainment! That's just about the way it's always been!
