My dream is to have one lap and one pedal steel, but until then, I have over half-dozen laps and two pedals (I know many of you have more -- even a dozen pedal steels). The reason this is my "dream" is because I want to be incredible familiar/intimate with only one, not several.
I would imagine that the majority of you will never go to just one lap and one pedal, but for those of you who have only one lap or one pedal (or one of each), and you prior had many, are you glad you whittled down?

I have one and one, and would never want more. My experience with other guitars is that when they start to collect they don't get played. |

I don't want to get "intimate" with one or
two guitars, I like to "play" the field!

Any guitar I use regularly for gigs, I feel I need one backup for, with essentially identical tuning and copedant (but not necessarily the same model). Then I'm covered if one is broken or being worked on. The rest are for my own amusement, or for experimenting with, and it doesn't bother me if I hardly ever play them. I am painfully aware that this arrangement does not work with women. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif) |

I have 3 pedal steels, but I only play one of them regularly. And it's getting to where I only really play one lap steel, too. My D-8 Stringmaster and both of my Sierra pedal steels have been resting in their cases for the past 6 months, at least.
So I've whittled down in theory, but I still own the other instruments.

I have used the same custom pedal steel that Zane Beck built for me in 1984. It has 14 strings and 14 pedals with half padded rear neck. He told me that he put more pulls on that steel than any other he built. I commented that I wanted him to build me another steel when I could afford another. He looked at me and said that I wouldn't ever need another one. He was right, I didn't. Sadly though it was the last time I ever saw him before he passed away.
Next, I have a 1937 Siver Ricky that I purchased about the same time from Scotty and it is suffice too.
Maybe I am a little old fashion, and I know there are many great steels out there, but I am satisfied.
GOD bless!
Woody

I used to have 2 pedal steels and a 10 string lap steel and many amps and effects but I cut that down to one pedal steel and a lap.I can't understand having a lot of them just sitting around when someone could enjoy playing them.I know some people just buy every time they see one for sale and have had many over their life time but I've had 3 different ones until I got my Franklin 20 some years ago and have had no need for another...RS
