What astonishes me about Ricky's playing with Linda is his ability to change his style to match the singer. His playing on this recording is different than anything I've heard him play with Dale.

Yeah, really great playing, that talks directly to my musical instincts!
Is there some flanger effect on the steel?

Thanks Ricky that is some very nice words my friend; glad you dig it.
Stephen; you noticed that did ya??ha.....cool man thanks.
Anders that was recorded with my Shobud through a Fender Hot Rod D'ville and a Fender Deluxe. So two amps and two channels and each channel was recorded panned right and left....so it's a broader sound...and just reverb on the amps....

Very good sound and veeery good picking! I listen over and over to that beatiful song - especially the intro. There are some properties in your playing that reminds of Lloyd Greens sometimes extremely tasty playing.

(Oh, yeah, I just figured it out. The rest of the time, Lloyd has massively tasty playing!)

Jim;
I´m not that familiar with american english, but for me there´s nothing above extremely tasty playing - that´s the upper limit. And, yes - Lloyd is my all time favourite over the years, even though he has some stiff competition nowerdays.

Anders, you are right about Ricky -- he can sound like a lot of players, but always retains his own distinctive sound.

He can sound like Lloyd when he wants to. Of course, the player he does best is Tom Brumley, being that he was Ricky's teacher and Ricky was such a good student.

I do wear my influences on my Sleeve...no doubt...and to me that is a tribute to all of them; as they are the reason I play Steel Guitar, and there is not a song go by that I'm not thinking/feeling about that.

Wow, finally, great country music. I listened to the clips and then tried to order online. It said nothing was available at this time. Let me know where I can get a copy Ricky and it is a done deal.

We have a young lady that was raised in the south and now leads our worship group at church that sings a lot like Linda. Man, there is some great talent out in the boonies singing their hearts out. I could listen and play music with them all day long.

How come that we only find out by accident about great talent like Linda, on the other hand we get buried in all that crap they throw at us all the time?

Beautiful playing, Ricky!

I hope there is a way to get this CD overseas, too!

Kind Regards, Walter

Thanks guys; but this CD came out a few years ago, and thought everyone had it by now??ha....
There's more about Linda Lay and several groups she sings with(oh and she plays upright bass too...ah..ha.)and ordering her projects through paypal I believe> right here> http://www.springfieldexit.com/discography.html
Oh and I forgot until I looked at the liner notes of the "Springfield Exit" CD by Linda Lay; that I also played Steel on 5 cuts of that project right here> http://www.crackerbarrel.com/about-heritage.cfm?doc_id=791
Unfortunatly you won't hear the steel in the sample clips as they didn't put any of them songs on it..ha...but If I remember right; I played a old single-10 Professional on this session as it jogged my memory reading this part>
quote:
David, Linda, and David are joined on this recording by two good friends who are also fine musicians. Virginia fiddler Rickie Simpkins is heard on four cuts, and Ricky Davis brought his vintage Sho-Bud pedal steel up from Austin, Texas, and did a fine job of exercising it on five cuts. "We are grateful to them," says David Lay. "They are the best I know."

On the springfieldexit site; there's a contact; and just tell them your my pal and they'll get you the projects.

I think that the CD, "Linda's Mercantile Store" is one of the best ever. Ricky, IMO, you did a tremendous job on that. What a sound!!!

I got this CD acouple of years ago and it's by far my favorite play along CD. For me it's what country really is. I could never get it lick for lick but it's close enough for me. Then Ricky says he does alittle something to his 7th string. No wonder I was lost. (( still am ))

Thanks guys.
Joey; yes on the Sho-bud I used on those sessions; I was lowering my 7th string a whole tone and raising the 2nd string a half tone, on a lever. I did use that change quite a bit on that project and even used both those changes together on some; but here is the solo Clip to:
Today I Started Loving You Again
And in the last finish measure as seen in the tab below; I use that change; but also give you an alternate way of playing it with a 7th string raise. But of course if you have neither and have gone over to the side of the modern day 6th string lower a whole tone thingy...then Oh WELL....ha.

Today I started Lovin' you Again Solo/Key of E/E9 Pedal Steel.
(2nd string "L" is lower 1/2 tone)(7th string "L" is whole tone)

Thanks for the tip. Following the above endorsements and descriptions of the Linda Lay disc, I phoned up our local Cracker Barrel and they had a bunch of those discs in stock. -nice price too. What a nice disc. Cool classics , and originals, nice arrangements, lead singing is cut from a Dolly or Allison Krauss knid of thing and the really fine harmonies remind me of a Carl Jackson or Herb Peterson kind of thing. Gorgeous tones. Clean mix and stereo placement. Solos and fills are choice, choice, fiddle, mando, elec. gtr., and steel work is super. Great soloing by all and a top to bottom really fine listen. And coming from Cracker Barrel, it's remarkable it's fat free too.
