I have been having so much fun experimenting with various tunings on my new SuperSlide ! Some of the tunings I can adjust to quickly and can start playing tunes with them right away, while with others I can't understand what their purpose is (at this point, anyway)! But trying to figure them out is a fun hobby, so my question is: has anyone ever compiled a book or booklet that explains (verbally) how various steel guitar tunings evolved, who tried them first, and what musical effect they are supposed to accomplish ?

"Manual of Style" by Winnie Winston and Jimmie Crawford contains some discussion of how the standard (E9 and C6 pedal) tunings evolved and also some charts of ideas and experiments along the way.

There was no "standard" when these guys started! They were still adding strings and moving them around.
