I saw an ebay ad for dapper dan's pedalsoft software. Being new to everything, I figured I'd ask around, is it something I should use to augment my playing, or is it just icing on the cake?

Kenn , AS a new-b too I can't say that I have. I'd get those instructional tapes first. The most important thing I learned from Mr. Newman was Technique is Everything.
I'm still lookin' for mine.

That's funny... I could have sworn that what I learned from Jeff was that technique WAS important but was nothing without taste and soul...

My memory's not what it used to but I'm pretty sure that was a big part of his teachings; I KNOW it was a huge part of his playing!

He sure is missed...

Sorry to take the thread elsewhere, but I couldn't resist. Don't know anything about the software but I'm curious to see what people have to say...

I'd be interested to see the software, but as an essential tool... no.

This is advice from someone (me) who over 10 years ago wrote "V-Steel!" a DOS program with similar functionality to this Dapper Dan(at least from the ebay description), that I give away as a free download.

you'd probably do as well/or better at gaining an understanding of the intervals on the neck with a good sharp No.2 and and a pad of Graph paper

I semi-agree with Dave Van Allen, the "semi-" being that you can trick Microsoft Word into drawing you a fretboard map under the "table" function - insert table, 12 columns, 10 rows and away you go. Print some up and pencil the notes in, by forcing yourself to think about it you'll remember it better. The more different routes you run the information through, the better the odds are of it sticking somewhere.

I've got the software, and It is a great tool for finding chords and scales.

Prerequistes:
1. You need to understand what a chord is and what a scale is.

Advantages:
1. keeps you from the hunt & peck method.
2. shows you what combinations does what.

Disadvantages:

1. Limited to 10 String setup
2. The tab feature could be a little bit better.

The problem with all the software packages it seems they do some things good and others not so good.

If you want a software that will show you a dimished scale in the key of E, it's your software. If you want to be able to see all the possible chord positions on one fret it is what you need.

I've done the other route of hunting it out and it is very time consuming.

I like it and use it. IMHO it is worth the money.
