That steel player is definately one of the best I have ever heard. What a great tone and knowledge of music he has. Don't know who he is but you can see his belly and he is certainly fueled by bisquits and gravy....like me.

Did you notice how small the bar he was using is?
Is that a clue?

Who out there uses the small bars?

Thanks for the link Damir!

The bar is not small, it just appears to be, since it is often hidden in the hand.

This shows it best:

I found the unusual technique in this photo interesting:

The right hand, especially the Thumb Pick placement, looks like Doug Jernigan

So who is it?

Further down the page, when discussing the Gimble and Vassar project, it mentions Joe Dye on steel and bass. Could it be him overdubbing? Notice the shots of the steel sitting behind the bass player with no one playing it. Whomever, he sure is smoking and has studied Buddy a lot.

Enquiring minds want to know...........

According to the site the video is on the bass player Joe Dye also plays the steel parts !!! As you can see , the steel stands unplayed behind Joe when he`s taking the bass solo . Not fair , this kind of talent...

That explains why we never see the Steeler's face!
The empty Steel Seat should have also been a clue.

I looked close again, and believe the hands and the clothes prove it the same guy.

Monster player! Thanks guys.

Joey- I'm not much of a steeler, but that bar looks miniscule to me. Mine's a 15/16, which is substantially bigger than my fingers- and that bar looks to me about the size of a ballpoint pen in those photos. Unless his fingers are HUGE. IMHO

Steve, I was thinking length, which appears standard.
I see what you mean about diameter. Maybe 1/2 inch?

I have an old tv show that Doug Jernigan played on with Vassar, he was playing a Black Shobud at the time, I think. Maybe that was Doug? The thumb pick placement kind of gives it away. What a great show that was & Doug just picked his you know what off!!

It's NOT Doug Jernigan!

I got a mail from Bob Harris the acoustic guitarist on the video he told me that it is the Bassplayer Joe Dye .Bob told me that He is probably one of the most talented musicians he have ever worked with! Joe Dye was in the studio just recently cutting tracks on the steel for more Vassar songs. Bob Harris told me when he get them mixed he will send it to me.. I will posed it as a mp3 when you all like it'
