Hey, I don't know about the rest of you all, but I really miss all these great steel guitarists of the past:
Jerry Byrd, Speedy West, Jimmy Day, Julian THarpe, Curly Chalker, Zane Beck, Bob White, Jeff Newman, and others!
I guess I am getting really sentimental but I really miss them all! Your thoughts on this topic!

Terry,
I miss some of them, but I do not know all of them.
For my part, I miss these great players:
Jules Ah See, Barney Isaacs, Andy Iona, Dick McIntyre, Jerry Byrd, Sol Ho'opii, Joe Custino, etc. These have played Hawaiian music.
Does anyone miss these great players?
Aloha,
Don

Terry,I sat next to all these players as they played their wonderful music. I still feel so honored to have done that. But just as important to me as their music ,was that they were great human beings. Fun people to be around if they were playing their instruments or not. Having said all that I wish I could go on stage and hear their music come from their amp once again.Do I miss them? You bet I do and will forever. Bobby |

Dan,
I remember that steel guitar that you all were building for Julian THarpe. I picked up my 14 stringer from Zane at that same time.
Also I still play the one that Zane built for me. I have tried to locate that particular steel you all built for Julian. His family doesn't know where it is at either. I stay in touch with them. I would like to try and purchase it, if I could locate it.
Bobby, I sure enjoyed all the great guitar pickin you done with those guys too. I know they and all of us love and admire your talents too.
GOD bless you all!

I suppose you could re-phrase the question to: "Who doesn't miss these great players?", but then, it would be an extremely short thread. |

Terry, I've known Zane for many yrs and I do miss talking to him and watching him play. And I've had a memorable evening with Curly at a mutual friend's home. And like all the other fans, I'll miss seeing Hal, and Jimmy Day and all the other pro's at the convention. I'm so glad that I was fortunate to have heard these pro's thru out the years. They're talent will live on forever. |

The man I miss the most, Speedy West. I used to talk to Speedy on the phone for hours about the "old days". I played bass for him at a Fender guitar show in Chicago back in the late 50s and have been friends since. I call Speedy the Godfather of the steel guitar. NOT to take anything away from anyone else, but he was a special friend. Who could play " I love you so much it hurts me" better than Jimmy Day, Hal Rugg, what can you say about the great Hal. We have lost way to many. I hope we don't lose anymore for a long time.

I miss all of those mentioned above..And feel doubly saddened when I consider the loss of some of the top INTERNATIONAL players, like :- Roland Peachey, Harry Brooker, Sammy Mitchel, Rudy Wairatta, Coy Pierra, George De Fretes, Harry Hugassian, Marcell Bianchi, Keith Worley, Gordon Huntley, Buckie Shirakata, Harry Martinez, and all the other NON USA players who have made immeasurable contributions to the instrument .!!

I sat down last night and watched the Emmons/Rugg video. I told my wife it was hard to believe that Hal is no longer with us. We have lost too many great players in such a short time. All we have is their projects and some great memories. I agree with a prior statement "I hope we do not lose another one for a long time". |

Its so sad to see all the greats we've lost in the last few years. There must be one more fine heavenly band up yonder. I miss Bobby Garrett.
