Stringspacing on 8 str. Lapsteel?

I’ve noticed that different stringspacings are used on lapsteels. Are there any standards (bridge, nut)? I’m building an 8 string and would like such things to be correct. I’ts a 22 ¼ inch shortscale mensur. I know that both spacing and mensur affects barslants, but what else advantages/disadvantages would there be.
Does anybody know what would be the correct stringspacing for Georges L’s 8 string pickup? I have just ordered one.
