I'm constantly amazed at all the great steel players that have come out of this state. (or at least lived here for a while) To name just a few: Wayne Dahl, Mike Cass, Cal Hand, Russ Pahl, Al and Chad Udeen, Ernie Renn. Since most of these guys have moved on to Nashville or other places, makes it easier for lesser lights like myself.

Don't forget Terry Bethel and Hal Rugg, both of whom lived and played in Minnesota at one time. Terry and Hal both played locally for a few years, and have ties to the community.
Having run the Minnesota Steel Guitar Association for over 6 years (now defunct), I have had the pleasure of meeting many of the players in the state, and many are fine players.
One young player on the move is Eddie Lange of Sauk Rapids, who will be attending Belmont College in Nashville this coming year. Watch out Nashville, a new steel player is on his way.
Some other players not mentioned, who are mainstays of the Minnesota Steel scene are Curt Olsen, Bill Lane, Jerry Dube, Steve Schmidt, Albert Svenddal (aka C.T. Allen, when he played in St. Louis), Dick Mileski, Joe Savage, Neil Lang, Roger Sindelar, and many others not known outside of Nashville, but nevertheless very capable players who contine to keep the steel alive in Minnesota.

Almost forgot, Denny Hemmingson with Tim McGraw. A fabulous guitar player also. In fact, I remember when he played guitar and Mike Cass played steel in Danny Hargrove's band at Denny's Loft.

Michael, I played the famous Flame Cafe in Minneapolis for about 8 years. Also Benny Heilman is from Minneapolis, he lives here now and fixes amp and other electronics. |

Ernie: Don't sell yourself short. We crossed paths a couple times when I was with Dacotah. I was duly impressed.
Tony: I've heard about Mr. Heilman from my friend and mentor Sonny Miller. Heard he can do some magical things without pedals. Also from many people about the famous Flame. A little before my time. But just a little.

We played the Goose a couple of weeks ago. When you're there, you're about twenty miles from my place. Have a good time!
George McLellan is also from MN.

Fishing season's on, so the Goose should be hopping. Also, Ernie, we're playing the Iron Rail June 6-7. If you're around, I'd appreciate it if you could stop out and have a look at my steel, tell me what you think. I'm just starting C6, so any advice would be helpful.

I had the pleasure of listening to Jerry Dube doing his set up in Winnipeg a few weeks back. He did a fine set. He told me there was going to be something going on in Hinkley in September, but I forgot the date.
Jerry, if you read this, let us know the details. I plan on being there.

I just want to thank you Minnesota steelers. I grew up in Plainview (near Rochester). It was probably some of you guys that I heard as a kid. I've never forgotten those sweet sounds.
I'm in a Minnesota state of mind today. My air conditioner just died as the thermometer approached 100 degrees. (sigh...) |

Hey Tony, I have had the chance to play behind some of the Mn. steelers and they are quite impressive. Some time when you visit, bring your guitar, because there are players here that will definitely jam with you till your fingers hurt. We might even bring some Ia. players to help you Mn. guys out. Huh Jerry????!~ |

Eddie Lange, sorry I missed you in St. Cloud at the Minesota R/C HOF Museum Grand Opening last Saturday, but we had a 2:30 setup and sound check in Hinckley.
Hope you can make it to Dube's Sept 10th Jam.

Launching Pad! I forgot about that place. The workers getting off at 8:00 in the morning from the Federal Munitions plant on Friday (payday) would fill that place. That was in 67'. I did about three of those. A group from "The Clover Club" in St. Paul had the steady gig, I filled in on bass for them. I was 7 nights a week at the Belmont.

it is nice to know that pedal steel lives in Minnesota.
Im new to the PSG. two ears ago I found a nice all original 74 ShoBud Pro 1.
I am slowly learning from a couple videos.
so far I know the major and minor chords and the use of the three pedals , but only one knee lever.
I really know little about the mechanics of this great instrument.
I assume it's me when things sound terrible. but what if this Bud needs a tuneup? how would I know.
so I am asking you Minnesota steelers for some help. I'll pack it up and bring it to you if you could take a look, show me some pointers and turn arounds and maybe an intro.
I am having fun figuring things out myself. maybe the more the merrier.?
any one? |
