Hi
I just got an old 45 record by Bob Wills "Steel guitar rag/San Antonio rose" on the label "Merit" from 1984. I don`t recognice this version of S.G R. Is it possible that he recorded this with other then Leon or Herbie at a later date??.He shout out some comments as usual, but it is not possible to hear any names, and I don`t recognise this version,`nor have I ever seen this label/release before.Anyone who knows this recording, and sorry, can`t transfer the record to give you a soundclip.
Regards,Egil.

It must have been Billy Bowman, Billy did most all on Bob Will's recordings after Leon McAuliffe and Herb Remington.Noel Boggs played on many earler recodings,I would run out of fingers to count the steel players that Wills had. Reece Anderson did many later
sessions with Bob Wills as well.

I hope this helps.

Jody is of course correct in his comments about the many steel players during the Bob Wills era.

If the 45 was a reissue it could have been any of the steelers that Jody mentioned, but if it was actually recorded in 1984, the steeler was probably Gene Crownover, who recorded with Bob during the last years. Crownover was the steeler on Bob's albums "A Living Legend", "TogetherAgain", and "Mr Words & Mr. Music".

My info is firsthand because in 1985, Crownover replaced me at the Diamond
Ballroom in Oklahoma City and he had been playing with the Texas Playboys Band who had continued performing after Bob's Death.

Leon McAuliffe joined other former Texas Playboys to record the nostagic "For The Last Time" in 1973.

Hi ya`ll.
and thanks Gene! I picked out of my collection the 1958 show from Wichita released on the Delta label, and it is that version played by Gene Crownover they have used on this 45,so thanks for putting me on the right track!!
