I am guessing Mr. Emmons on these first two, but since I can't find it on a search.
1) "Common Man" by John Conlee
2) "Black Sheep of the Family" by John Anderson.
That "bite" sound along with that "snappy" style picking is my favorite sound by far. It is the sound I hear in my head when I think "steel guitar!"
3) "God must be a Cowboy at Heart" by Dan Seals. Awfully smooth playing with some great licks. Who?
Thanks,
Dave |

David-I was playing steel with John Conlee when"Common Man"was released...if I remember correctly,Larry Sasser played steel on that song. The Dan Seals record,I believe Doyle Grisham played on...the"Black Sheep"record may have been Buddy Emmons,as he did several John Anderson albums...or it could have been Buck Reed...hope this helps...

Hi Steve and yes that helps! The sound on Common man in particular is just amazing. I would love to be able to duplicate that sound, but several years of searching has shown me that I need to keep searching.
The timing and walk down on "Black Sheep" is so perfect.
The smoothness and creativity on "God a Cowboy at Heart."
These are probably my favorite rides as recordings go. I just never took the time to research the artists that brought these peices to life.
I appreciate the help.
Warmest regards,
Dave |

I think it was Buck on the Anderson recording. But, you are right on that walkdown. Nice! I have some Gospel albums
that Larry Sasser played on. I strive for
his kind of tone! |
