I just heard Poco's "Bad Weather"on the radio while driving. What great steel guitar playing throughout the song.To me this song is the perfect vehicle for Rusty,I think his approach is just awesome. |

I had a chance to see that POCO line-up play that tune a few times..awesome...
Paul Cotton singing the verses, Richie singing the choruses and playing 12 string.,.Rusty just doin' it..
Paul, Tim, Richie and George singin' those great harmonies...

I have that album. Honestly, it's scratchy from me playing it so much.
Of course, I bought it because of Rusty's playing and the music! |

It is great to see Rusty be recognized for his pretty traditional work on this song. A lot of times he gets known more more some of his innovations, but in this case he makes that steel really cry. For another great example of his mastery of the instrument, listen to the break on What Am I Gonna Do which is on the same album as Bad Weather. He's a fantastic player and a great guy just to talk to.

I agree with you also, I had a live album of Poco on cassette years ago and that solo on Bad Weather is still fresh in my mind. That song is one melodic joy. I have to see if I can find that tape.
Take care all,
Bill Bailey

That was the song that introduced Paul Cotton to the country-rock world. I was a very hard-core Poco fan and it really took a song that good for me and my friends to give Paul a break and accept him as a new member of the band.
It seemed like after that album, however, they turned into the Paul Cotton Blues band. LOL. and I became disinterested from that point on.
The original lineup was transcendent, IMO.

Rich, I couldn't agree more. Every word you said. It took "Bad Weather" for me to accept him as a replacement for Jimmy Messina, but then... well, he never built upon that great tune and produced others. He revealed his true stripes as just another rock guitarist, and I lost interest permanently. And it was Rusty Young who first got me into steel ("Kind Woman") too! |

Richie has a book on Poco called (what else ) "Pickin Up The Pieces" that he wrote with Michael Roberts, a fine writer here in the Denver area. It will not be out until April, but will be a real treat for all the Poco fans, with some great detail and stories.
We are mixing Richie's new record right now, and Paul sings some great harmonies on one of the tracks, and plays guitar on another one. A great guy to work with ... |

If you come across a copy of the bootleg "country bump" (tmq 73036); that would be on vinyl only (as far I've ever seen). It's a live recording from Columbia
studios (though it sounds like it's an outdoor venue) about the time "From the Inside" was released(1971?).
The sound quality is excellent, as is the performance. Did I mention that (IMHO) an even better solo of "Bad Weather" is waiting
for those lucky enough to find it?
A terrible tease, I am...

Not only was Rusty's steel work great on'Bad Weather' but the harmony on that cut was nothing less than outstanding. I esecially like harmonys that embelish maj7ths.

For background please read the recent thread
here which references another thread... nested convolutedly...
both of which serve to exemplify my LONG TERM admiration for Rusty Young, and his solo on the tune "Bad Weather".
Simply stated my feeling is if Rusty had never played anything but the steel work on Buffalo Springfield's "Kind Woman" and POCO's "Bad Weather" he earned his place in the pantheon.
as also stated by others in this thread "What Am I Gonna Do" has some classic, clean, pure as-country-as-any-ever steel guitar on it as well.
