I've had Dwight Yoakam's "Population Me" CD for a while. Last week I suddenly got into it. It is possibly the best songwriting/vocal/PSG matchup I've ever heard. Classic honky-tonk style. Absolutely beautiful.

The steeler is Gary Morse, who I believe is a forum member (now playing with Dierks Bentley). My favorites have shifted over the week, but "No Such Thing", "Fare to Midland" and "If Teardrops Were Diamonds" are more than inspired.

Gary also plays on Yoakam's "Tomorrow's Sounds Today", which arrived today.

Dwight's going to be just 70 miles away on Aug 4. I understand he doesn't have a steeler now. Dangit!

The rumor I heard is that Gary Morse just started working for Brooks & Dunn this week.

Yes Alvin; that rumor is correct and taking Gary's place with Dierks is San Antonio's Kenny Groaman{sp?}.
Charles; that is a perfect sumation of that CD and yep; Gary Morse makes everything sound Perfect.
My friend Keith Gattis Plays Guitar with Dwight and eventhough there's not a steel in their band now...it's still pretty dang good and Honky Tonk-ish.

That's how I found out, I was going to work with Kenny Grohman on some gigs next month, in fact we were supposed to be going to France for a week .
I'm a little bummed out about it now, I got to do some gigs last month with him and had a great time. I do wish, Kenny and Gary, both happiness and good luck on their new gigs. Just don't forget about me, still out here in the cruel world of honkytonks, beer joints, dives, and dancehalls.

Charles, sounds like I'll have to pick that one up. I do have "Dwights Used Records" and "Blame the Vain", though. Both are excellent...really hard to find hard core honky tonk/country punk anymore. On used records, he does a duet with Heather Myles (If I were You) and the steel is awesome. I don't know who it is though. Blame the Vain is my recent favorite and it has some pretty good steel here and there on it...also lots of baritone guitar (I think thats what it is).

The new concert tour is great and kickin'. Danny Gattis burns and covers the Pete Andersen stuff well and the bass and drums just plain kick butt. Dwight introduced them as being Johnny Cash's former road crew. Lots of stand up base with a monster groove.

Tom,

I just got "Blame the Vain" and "Tomorrow's Sounds Today" yesterday, ....uh...... Anyway, I haven't had time to get into them, but if you like honky-tonk, good songwriting and singing, and great musicians then I'd say "Population Me" is a must buy.

I've been into Dwight since his debut, but his other CDs I've got don't feature steel guitar very prominently. On "Population Me" the steel is right out front, and absolutely beautiful. Heck, I even found myself liking Willie Nelson's vocals on "Teardrops" :^).

Charlie (has always admired Willie as a songwriter)

Ricky,
I was surprised to hear that Keith Gattis is now backing Dwight. I bought Keith's solo CD when it first came out and thought it was terrific. The cut, "Whoop-de-do" is a my personal favorite, it had a very classic, early George Jones feel.
