. . . and found it a very wonderful, significant piece of the LA rock and country scene. I gave been through LA and SF several times. I am 54 myself adn was introduced to West Coast music scene in the mid 60s i guess. Early Linda R, FBBros, Byrds, Gram Parsons, etc. It feed into Poco, PPL, etc.

Unfortunately I was not aware of Red Rhodes contribution. It's important to keep thsoe times in tack. That whole scene / genre had severely influenced me and I would not be released. In about 1969 I was playing in a 'Rolling Stone' style R&R band that leaned on a few country tunes as a few mainstream rock acts did.

anyways . . . some of ya'll who were there inside the LA music scene in those early days, tell a few stories of your adventures and musicians you meet and were involved with.

It would a pleasure to read.

Pray for rock & roll.

later,

Billy

The best tube amp I ever played bass through was an old Dual Showman belonging to Skip Batten that Red Rhodes had rreworked to use the 6440 tubes instead of the orignial 6L6's. BIG power for those days and a great sound. Before that I only knew of Red as a steel picker, when in fact he was so much more....

I think those were 6550 tubes...a popular mod in those days. My Vibroverb had them for a while.

"Red's Royal Ampllifier Service" was the name of his shop. At one time Skunk Baxter worked the counter.

Red was the one who also made the dual-coil (the second coil not a humbucking, but a "boost") that was on Clarence White's Tele for a while in the 70's. It had been removed some time before Marty Stuart got the guitar. I have some of the reissues Red made of that pickup. His family made them for a while after Red passed, but not any more. Too bad - best Tele pickup EVER.

Yes, Jim, you're correct - a typo on my part. 6550's they were.

yea, Fender mostly used multiples of 6L6GC in there bigger amps, Showman, Bassman, Bandmaster, Twinn, Super, etc. Sunn liked the 6550 as my old Sunn 1200S had what, maybe 4 to 6 6550 (i can't rememebr exactly).

Skip B. played with the Byrds in the later years, i.e. Lover of the Bayou, Chestnut Mare and many more.

BTW: talking of bass players in the 60's west coast scene i am talking to Chris Ethridge (FBB) about coming down to do some recording and playing in the Gram Parsons fest in Waycross this Oct 14-15. very down to earth man, easy to talk to. he's in Mediran, MS. at present (as is my friend Marty McCann with Peavey).

The 5881 was an Industrial replacement for 6L6GC(?)GB. Power~Tubes. (Quite hot!) Good sound for the times! [Why did I Post at all, if I don't know what I'm talkng about?] I don't know that either! And a Double Post too¡
