No we're not discussing your reaction when your honey says.. " NO you are NOT getting another stupid pedal steel"!!..

I'd like to hear some thoughts about the physical things that inhibit some of us in our steel playing.. especially in the hands, and how you counteract it.

Its summer now, and I am cursed at this time every year.. I sweat in ridiculous amounts out of the palms of my hands, and the soles of my feet..[but thats another disgusting story]..
I need to play with a towel, and an oily rag, as the strings are so filthy and crusty after just a short time, that the bar feels like its covered with wet sandpaper.. Real annoying... Sweat pours all over the pickup, changer, fretboard.. its disgusting... I can't even keep picks on in the summer.

I'm thinking of installing a drool bucket on the keyhead!...

anyway, I'd like comments from anyone else that has strange hand/finger problems that are detrimental to thier playing... ESPECIALLY sweating! ..bob

Bob, you need to apply an antiperspirant to your hands. They can be purchased at any sporting goods store or golf proshop. They have aluminum compounds in them that control sweating like an underarm product. Of course you could use Right Guard, but make sure it is an antiperspirant and no one sees what you are doing.

Take a two or three portable fans with you (take a fuse strip so you can plug them all in). Point them to your head and/or hands. Keep a bottle of water and paper towels next to your steel. Since you're most likely outdoors, you can periodically dump some water on your hands and wipe them off with the paper towels. Make sure that when you pour the water, you stay clear of your cables!!

Bob, if you keep a towel on your person while playing, be sure you DO NOT wrap in around your head. After the 9/11 attack this could lead to problems. Or you could use that new deodorant called "VANISH". You spray it all over your body, you disappear and everyone wonders where the smell and the music is coming from. hahahahahaha.
(you knew this was coming, didn't you?)

Man, depending on where you're getting those, it sounds like you should take an aspirin and call an ambulance!

These are serious symptoms which should not be disregarded.

You should sell your steel and amp, relinquish your forum membership, and find a different hobby; kayaking perhaps.

Contact your nearest funeral home and make arrangements while you are still conscious but not before you take Marty's advise in full! Kayaking? Can you swim? If not, don't learn!

BTW this is an unintelligent answer to an unintelligent post!

Seriously...

I had a friend who sweated badly. He didn't smell bad, but always had dark marks under his armpits, back etc. He had some sort of electrolysis treatment which helped some. If you're on any medication, check back with your doctor.

Best of luck,

Ian

For outdoor gigs...
I do keep a small cooler with ICE just for a small wash cloth..in between tunes I basically wash and dry my hands and wipe down my face and forehead...

Keeping your hands clean and NON sweaty is a must...

Indoors this is not necessary ..this is the South...if the temp in the club is hi ..it will be empty...and I won't be there either...

Bob, I play here in Texas and its plenty hot on outdoor gigs. I am also a fishing guide, so I spend a lot to time outdoors. I use a product called a "Cool Tie" and it works very well to help keep the body temp down and slow down persperation problems. Here is a web site to them: http://www.cooltiesareus.com/index.html

Also, in talking about hand problems, I have only recently begun playing steel. When I was young and rode bulls in TYRA, I got my right thumb amputated in a riggin accident. Although most the thumb survived, I basically have nub with no feeling in it. It has take me all the first 2 1/2 months of learning to play just to get used to a thumb pick being on there. At first, it would slip off and because I cant feel it, I would never know it was slipping until it fell on the fretboard. To over come the problem, I learned from Bobby Bowman that the application of a small amount of hairspray on the thumb, then sliding the pick over the damp spray, would cause it to stick to my thumb but yet, I could easily slip the pick off with a little pressure on it. If one has enough desire to do something, I think they can over come the obstacles.....James

Hi Bob
You need to think about your concentration I recomend you read The Inner Game of Music By Barry Green and Timothy Galllwey a fab book about this very subject. I work with classical musicians who suffer greatly with pressure of work ect. Its mind over matter in the end but the above book deals with methods of overcoming the very real problems that are associated with good musical preformance. If you read it let me know what you think about it.

James.. I admire you... having only part of a thumb would have shut a lot of us down as far as playing steel is concerned.. and thanks for the Cool Tie idea..

Tony.. Yeah ice helps but its a pain using it on a gig sometimes..... I heard there is some prescription medication that you can put on your hands that REALLY works, but you need to see a doctor to get it... Its not perfomance anxiety that causes my severe sweating.. Its been this way since I was a little kid.. I sweat very little elsewhere, but I POUR sweat out of the hands and feet in summer anwhenever the humidity is high.. I'm wired up in a very odd manner... really ridiculous..
btw, Ron S...tough... bob
