Would the Sustain Units on the market make a big difference in the sound of a 50's D8.

They certainly would make a difference in the sound. Whether the result is what you'd like to hear is another thing.
What kind of "50's D8" are we talking about? What don't you like about the sound, and what are you hoping a sustain unit would give you that you're not already getting?
More information is needed to properly answer the question.

It is a National D8.Looking for longer sustain.
