I am ashamed to admit that I knew little about this legend of the steel guitar. Like many here, I grew up listening to and learning from the country rock greats..
It wasn't until later that I started understanding that the guys I listened to learned from guys like Byrd,Murphy, Brumley, Mooney, Emmons,Day, Garrett, etc. etc.... I knew the Garrett name, not the substance. I am a steel player, so just by default I knew of a steel guitar giant by the name of Bobby Garrett.
Enter Rick Garrett, one of the first on the forum to see right through the computer screen that I was not the mental case some took me to be. Somehow, he could see through the pain and wild mood swings I tend to live with.
He was able to see in my writing the dedicated family man that loves Jesus, his family, people in general,,the steel guitar, and little wierd animals .
This forum has ,from the first day I "signed up"been a special place to me, LOADED with very kind, caring folks, and Rick has been one of the kindest.. I hope to be able to shake his hand one day...
I thank him for the book he wrote that opened up his life, his family's life, his dad's life.
I now know so much more about a steel guitar legend, and about his son, one of our forum brothers. Also, many of the legendary names I see here on the forum are mentioned in Rick's book.
If this book weren't signed by the author to me, I would surely pass it on to others who would like to learn much of the story of a steel guitar legend.
If you are an "old timer" that loved Bobby's playing, or a guy like me, who knew the name, but not the talent, get to know his son.
Ricks book is a look into a family's deepest secrets, and Rick shares many of the hurts and joys of being the son of a steel guitar legend.
Rick, thanks for sharing your life so openly, and thanks for the many kind words you have had for me personally. bob

Bob, I couldn't agree more!
I mentioned how much I enjoyed reading Rick's book in a previous thread. Tommy has also read it, and agrees there's a lot of good history in those pages - not to mention some extremely powerful personal moments. I was so very moved by Rick's strength, and the poignant images of himself growing to forgiveness.
It's a MUST READ!!! |

Bob and Donna, thanks so much for you kind words. You have both touched my heart. It is my fondest hope that people who read my book will be blessed by it and that folks will come to know what a special person my dad was. Your words have made my fondest hope a reality and I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. God bless

After talking several times with Rick, and reading his book thru 2 times.I just feel like i really know him,and what a fine young man he is.Rick is always being kind and doesn't ever say things to hurt people.
My heart goes out to him,so many people would be so bitter. these days i know lots of younger generation that says so much to cut there parents.I've got 2 nephews 44yrs and younger that talks to there mom like a dog.
RICK,my hat is off to you man! I would like to encourage everyone to get his book, and read it.what a blessing. GOD BLESS YOU

Rick and Nina Garrett are two of the most beautiful people I know. I've known Rick only a short time, but I met his dad,Bobby, when Bobby was 14 yrs old. Bobby and I worked in music together on several different occassions and visited frequently. One of my best memories was when we both had our steels on stage and he would play the C6 part, and I would play the E9 part on "Rose City Chimes". So many great memories. It is so nice to see so much of Bobby in Rick. Jody. |
