What tuning would you use for the distorted slide type music used in modern country? Six string skreemr?

Thanks in advance,

My group plays alt-country/roots music, so I use a lot of overdrive. I tune to open-G, with a C on top for a suspended chord -- I can get some Keith Richards and Sonny Landreth sounds. Low to high: G D G B D C.

I like having to slide up to the root note (G) on the high D string. And hey, open G or A was good enough for Lowell George and Bonnie Raitt, so who am I to argue? ;^)

To my ears, the 'G' type of tunings (5-1-5-1-3-5 or 1-3-5-1-3-5) and the 'E' type (1-5-1-3-5-1) has very different 'vibes' to them.

I've always found the 'G' tuning to be more 'open' and 'friendly' if you like, while the 'E' tuning is darker and more 'threatening' (as Ry Cooder once described it).
Open E or D is my peronal favorite for 6-string, Cooder and Lindley also favors this tuning, but in the end it's all a matter of personal taste, isn't it?

Steinar

What Steinar said !!! Open E(EBG#EBE..High to Low) or down to D will do it all. Great for bar chords & leads, and just listen to what Lindley can do with this tuning.
