My wife and I went to see Vince Gill and Amy Grant at the Ryman Saturday night. Vince introduced John Hughey and spent several minutes praising John's talent and telling how fortunate he was to have had a steel player of John's caliber for a period of several years. He compared John's contribution to his sound to that of Don Rich to Buck Owens or Ralph Mooney to Waylon. He then introduced "Look at Us" by saying he knew it had to be a hit after he heard John play the intro. The response of the crowd indicated their agreement. It was great to hear this praise given to a musician and to a steel player in particular. [This message was edited by Tim Hurst on 02 April 2005 at 10:36 PM.] |

Tim...I know where Newport is and that it would be quite a hike , but for some of you that are a step closer , John will be with us at the annual convention in Tulsa on Memorial weekend.......your chance to see a legend at work. Three days of great steel guitar music so plan on being with us. |

I've seen Vince praise John many times over the years. It is both, very well deserved and Vince is truly a standup guy for recognizing the talent and saying so. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to be quite this way with Conway, whom John gave that truly unique Twitty sound to as well. It was great to see John wind up with Vince because of a lot of reasons...but especially for Vince's appreciation of him. I salute them both. |

It's good to pick with a picker, like Vince Gill, Hag, etc. because they love the playing. I've seen too many that do not feature the musicians at all, like they think they don't need them.
I saw John Hughey with Conway in the seventies in Bakersfield. Conway just sang, I don't remember him saying anything at all.
I believe he did appreciate John though, I understand they were childhood friends. Never give him much credit though.

Two great musicians who are a class act to boot. John is one of the nicest and most humble great musicians I've met; a master of both necks and a true inspiration. Vince is a truly gifted singer and excellent guitarist to boot.
So glad to see John Hughey get his "propers"!

I recently attended the Dallas jamboree which was my first one in the USA.
I had the extreme pleasure of meeting and talking to John Hughey and I was totally astounded at his humble and friendly demenour. He is not only an exceptional steel player he is a true Gentleman.
It is really good to see that Vince Gill is giving him the accolade he deserves.
This tells me that Vince is also a Gentleman
Best regards
Billy |

How about all the tutorial work John has done? I believe that type of work will be around for generations with the instrument. |

John and Jean are 2 of the nicest people you will ever meet. I think Vince must be a very nice guy too, cause he came to see John at St. Louis this year knowing what he would have to go thru. When he came in he was flogged. He put up with it a LONG time. Thanks Vince. Thanks John and Jean. Donna |

Vince is a really nice guy, a Genuinely Good Person. I had the good fortune to play with him a little bit. It was a treat.
I remember Vince telling me he was about to have John Hughey play with him. I'd never seen him so delighted and eager with anticipation. It was like, "Wow, me? Can you believe it? I get to PLAY with him!!"
That's a good combination, two true gentlemen. |
