| Anyone local to Atlanta know enough about Pro Tools to come to my place and teach me the basics of using it? I'll pay! I have had this and just can't get the hang of it. Should've just bought a desktop recorder. |

The best way to learn protools is at protoolsvideos.com
You can purchase a DVD of lessons, or you can subscribe to the online lessons. These guys know their stuff and the lessons are well organized and easy to follow. The lessons are available for wither mac or pc.
Don't give up on protools. It is the best way to record and is not that compicated once you get the basics.

| Pro Tools Free was released to run under Windows 98. For those of us that would like to use it but want to use the "free" version, does anyone know if there is a good audio card recommended for the Win 98 environment that will give more than 2 channels of input? |

Hello Keith,
I'm using Pro Tools, 001, on Mac os9.
It works great and is very user friendly. OS10, is a different story.
If you are using something other than a Mac, I probably can't help.

| I'm using ProTools LE 6.4. I can figure things out a little bit, I guess it is going so slowly at this point that it is worth spending the funds to get someone to just show me; the plugins and all that are a lot to take in, and I never used any software at all back in my recording days. There wasn't any... |

This thread will probably be changed to computers or electronics soon... but anyway.
I own and operate a post-production studio... and we have used Pro tools for years (we now use Nuendo, and have thrown our protools away, but that's another story).
Anyway. Just some tips and tricks.
Any track based program is based on the same principles. You have a timeline, and tracks that display "regions" that refer to audio files on your hard drive.
To edit these regions, you use the mouse pointer and switch between different sets of "tools" displayed at the top of the program window. ( a cross hair, a hand, magnifiying glass, etc...)
These tools allow you to manipulate the regions in different ways. The two most useful are the hand and the 'i' tool (looks like a capital i). With the hand you can select and or move regions around, with the i you can select areas within regions to edit or delete or whatever.
Whithin the track view, in the left hand side, in grey, you can manipulate the way the audio is routed to your sound card. that is, use inserts, sends, auxiliaries, etc...
also here, there is a little drop down menu where you can choose to display "volume" lines, and edit the total volume level of that track with the hand tool
These are a couple of the not so obvious places to find specific things...

| Keith,you can use Pro Tools like a tape machine...I have a 13-year-old son who records on it regularly.We have just recently started trying to use some of the edit functions...we have friends who record on Yamaha and Roland desktop recorders,and the Pro Tools seems much simpler to us(after calling Sam Ash and having our salesman tell us how to get up and running...) |

I run pro tools le 6.1.1, have been using protools le for approx 3 years now. I am about 88 miles north of Atlanta in Rocky Face. Be happy for you to come up some time and show you what little I know.
