As a new member of the forum I would like to introduce myself. I am Harvey Kimray
living in Edgewood, NM. I have been a bass player for 33 years and have always liked the
sound of the pedal steel. A couple of months ago,at the age of 68, I decided to take the
plunge and learn the steel. Thanks to my good friend Jim Harper who told me about the
forum and answering a bunch of questions. I am the proud owner of a Derby SD10 3X5.
Charles and Margit Stepp are courteous people to deal with.

Welcome, Harvey. I too was a guitar and bass player before starting steel. Your bass background will help because you can hear chord changes. Steel is lots of fun to learn. Find a teacher, if you can. Have fun and keep reading the Forum. Larry J. |

Thanks for all the encouragement. When I was in the 7th & 8th grade I took piano lessons and hated every minute of it. Now with the steel I can't wait when I get up to sit down and start practicing. The forum has really been a great help and appears to have a lot of really nice people.
Thanks and God Bless everyone.

Welcome aboard Harvey. I quit playing for quite a few years until I went to a Preservation Hall Jazz Band concert one night. The tenor banjo player was 90 years young! I thought, this guy has been on tour longer since he was my age (at the time) than I was old! I left that concert knowing that it was time to get playing again. I've never looked back.
I hope you enjoy the PSG as much as I do.

Hey Harvey, welcome to the best damned place on this planet to get info about the steel guitar .
I too started the steel very late in life but, that sure is not holding me back. I am a long time chromatic harmonica musician, which most certainly is a long way from guitars; however, my musical background has sure given me a boost to do some of the things I can do with the steel.
Enjoy the most emotional instrument on the planet.
now if I could only find an 8" bar to reach some of those other frets.

(I am not right all of the time but I sure like to think I am!)
