Thanks, Jack
I was 14 at the time and in a high school band that played all over town and occasionally on TV. Many of the performers and announcers pictured were folks I ran into from time to time. I went to school with Hank Williams, Jr. and they show Jack Gregory (brilliant horn player and band leader -- in several pictures) whose son I played in a band with. Wow, Boyce Hawkins, Teddy Bart, Boots, Kay Golden . . . all names I'd almost forgotten. I remember Marty Robbins' racing career -- also played in a band with his son just about that time.
WHEW!!! Brings back memories for me.
Thanks again.

I saw a picture of Roy Acuff, June Stearns,
and "Brother Oswald" from 1964. It brought back memories of my first visit to the Grand Ole Opry in May of 1963.
Pete Drake was one of the staff steel players on the Opry then. I was able to talk to him at The Midnight Jamboree after the Opry.

Connie Smith was a very pretty lady even back in 1964. The picture of Weldon Myrick reminds me of what my uncle told me. He remembered Weldon playing in Big Spring, Texas before he went to Nashville. He told me there was a good steel player that played out in that area and he moved and he never knew what happened to him. I asked who it was and he repiled it was Weldon Myrick. I said man he has been the staff steel player on the Grand Ole Opry for 30 years. After all those years he remembered Weldon and how great a player he was and I know he is even better today. Weldon Myrick, one of my personal favorites. |
