is anyone near Mission Texas , i just found out that my wife is being transferred there and we have to be there this monday, and i would like to meet other steelers in the area

Not too many steelers living down here in this part of the state. We do have a few "Winter Texans" that play steel for the few months they are down here dodging the ice and snow.

I visit my in-laws down in Harlingen now and then - but have yet to run into much steel down in the Valley. Lee's your man, no doubt - and he's right about Herbert's in San Marcos...!

Well, I talked to Calvin on the telephone. He and his wife will be here for a few months and will then be moving on.
Calvin is a steel newbie. He said he recently purchased a Zum S-10 that has 3 pedals and 4 knee-levers. He has a Yamaha amp that will work fine for learning, but he still needs to purchase a volume pedal. I'll help him with that.
Calvin likes old country music from the 1960's. He doesn't play any other musical instruments and doesn't know much about chord progressions.
There are a couple of us down here that can work with him while he is here; but, he needs to get his hands on some good courses he can work on during the day. He has a DVD player and lots of free time.
I want him to get Winnie Winston's old book from the 1970's. I think every newbie should have that one. Can any of you recommend some good courses that will get Calvin off to a good start? I've got Frenchy's catalog to look through, but I thought maybe you guys might have some good suggestions.

Scotty's first book, "Anthology of The Pedal Steel Guitar" is, in my opinion, the absolute best instructional manual ever.
It covers Beginers, (starting with setting up the guitar), to Intermediate, to Advanced players. A cassette tape is available at extra charge, (it may be available on CD now, I don't know), but it really needs to be purchased.
If I'm not mistaken, it is still available from Scotty's Music, and they can be reached through a link on this forum.

I play my Excel U-12 E9/B6 on Sundays with the band Midnight Rodeo at "The New Pepe's On The River, 2 to 6 (or later)near McAllen. For the next three weeks I have a 4 piece band in Port Isabel, TX 2 to 6 on Sundays at Pirates landing. Come visit with me.
