I received Mark'S new cd last Friday,Savin' The Honky Tonk, and have played it non stop since. I belevie it is the best true country music cd I've heard in the last 20 years. And of course what can be said about Paul Frankin's playing that has not been already been said. I saw Paul play in St Louis when he was just a kid, fall of 87, and I thought then what a player. This cd is a must for true country music lovers and steel guitars lovers.

I still think Kevin Fowler's versions of those two songs on Mark's album are better. Kevin wrote those songs you know.

One of my favorite albums. Great steel on every track. Good to see him getting back to the real stuff... even though he never has strayed far from it as many others.
Earlier threads on the CD here...

Just for the record, those 2 songs are "The Lord Loves the Drinking Man" and "Beer Bait and Ammo" I play with Kevin, and that Chesnutt CD is one of our favorites. (even the ones Kevin didn't write)
Of course we like both versions, but we think our live versions are better
I didn't play on those cuts on Kevin's CDs, but I did play on "J.O.B." and "Drinkin Days" from "Beer Bait and Ammo."
We're in Steamboat Springs playing a festival this week. I'm about to find out how well I can play with the left thumb I just sprained skiing. I should have quit after my first run down the mountain.
I'll pass along the good feedback to Kevin - he'll appreciate it.....

Might I add that Arty did a great job at Kevin's New Year's Eve gig in Fort Worth. It was so packed, I was surprised that I was able to pay him a compliment for nice pickin', on the way back from the bathroom

I have to credit Paul Franklin (and myself) with selling another copy of this one. I loaned it to a fellow HagFan--not a steel player, but a steel lover-- today. He'd heard it playing during a party at my house and had asked about giving it a closer listen. I told him all he'd need to hear was the first intro and he'd want a copy. Well, I was only kidding, but 5 minutes later he handed it back to me, saying, "You're right! I'm going to buy that one".
That first intro is about as crisp and clean as a steel can sound. Fantastic country steel!

It was nice of the producer to let Mark sing on Paul's latest C.D.

Did anyone else notice a slight tuning problem on this CD? Possibly everyone on the session didn't tune to the same tuner? Mixing problem? |

Mark Chestnut is the real thing and he plays some great honky tonkin dance music. I still miss his (I think) original guitar player that passed away a couple of years back. He also was one of a kind. |
